The biography of an Indian transgender is an essential read though understandably, not an easy one.

In 2003 , she underwent an expensive gender reassignment surgery and became a woman .She was the first from her community who has completed her PhD on transgenders in 2005. Not only the transgenders but any LGBT person are termed as chhakka or hijra , which is not only humiliating for the person to whom it is addressed but also for the entire country , India , a country of diversity which is always known for democracy and equal human rights.

She achieves her success when in 2014 the transgenders were declared as the ‘ third gender ‘. Bandyopadhyay herself has stated in an interview to the Hindustan Times, how she has fought the battle against ignorance of society , where she and her father has been threatened with dire consequences because of her transgender identity.

After she moved from her hometown Naihati’s Rishi Bankim Chandra College to Jadavpur University to study Bengali literature, Manobi’s worldview expanded under the tutelage of Shankha Ghosh and Pabitra Sarkar and in the company of her equally intellectually stimulating fellow students.

Personal life

She has an adopted son named Debashish.[3] She underwent gender-affirming surgery in 2003.[1][2]

In 2013 she was a contestant on Bigg Boss Bangla.[4] In 2019 Bandyopadhyay played a role in her debut film Purba Paschim Dakshin directed by Rajorshi Dey.[6]

Her only desire was that the film should reach every corners of India so that the harassments faced by the people dealing with issues of gender dysphoria can find a path to cope with the situation.

Manabi Bandyopadhyay (born 1964/1965)[1] is the first openly transgender Indian college principal.[2]

Career

Bandyopadhyay served as an associate professor of Bengali and philosophy at Vivekananda Satobarshiki Mahavidyalaya.[1][3]

She became the Principal of Krishnagar Women's College on 7 June 2015[3] after a decade of struggling against patriarchy and convoluted notions regarding the third gender.
