Who Was George Michael?

As a teenager, George Michael formed the band Wham!

In 1984, the duo had their first worldwide hit with "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go." Two years later, Michael went solo, releasing a hit debut album Faith, which has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide. The album featured a few hits, including "Praying for Time." Further distancing himself from his pop image, he chose not to star in the video for "Freedom 90." Instead, the video featured such models as Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford.

Solo Career

While Listen Without Prejudice, Vol.

1 received some positive reviews, the album only sold about 1 million copies. Their relationship was often in the spotlight, and Michael spoke openly about the impact Goss had on his life and artistry. Michael's partner Fawaz found him dead at his home in Oxfordshire on Christmas morning.

"It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period," read a statement by his publicist.

A contract dispute with the Sony record label led to periods of up to eight years during which Michael did not release albums of original work, but he reconciled with Sony in 2003 to release the chart topping Patience in Europe in 2004.

Michael was born Georgios Kyriakou Panayiotou in London on June 25, 1963.
