She grew up in Canada. In 2019, Dobrev began dating Shaun White, a five-time Olympian snowboarder and actor. That was when White discovered just how famous Dobrev was.
In a People interview published on Jan. 12, 2022, White explained that when he first met the actress, “I actually didn't know anything about her.” They went to a restaurant post-event, and he remembered the staff asking, “‘Can we get a photo...with her?’ And I was like, ‘What’s happening?
I didn't give a s--t about the money at all - it was the principle."
Dobrev isn’t the only star to walk away from their hit show. In addition, a new conflict arose as the studio tried to limit the use Dobrev pulling double duty as Elena and Katherine due to needing to pay the Degrassi alum for playing the villainous vampire in addition to her human counterpart.
"It got really heated, and so it basically got phoned back down to us writers that we were not allowed to write Katherine in at all ever," the show’s co-creator Julie Plec said in the book, "which of course was not something that I felt was right or fair."
The way Dobrev saw it, alleged that "They just said out of principle they wouldn't bump me up to being equal to the boys."

"So that was probably the most hurtful because it felt like I was really working hard," she said, "and we shot 18-hour days sometimes, and nights, and I was putting my absolute heart and soul, blood, sweat, and tears into it."
After tensions simmered, more episodes with Katherine were granted, but as Plec remembered of the negotiations, which involved The CW then-president Mark Pedowitz, "I literally think we had to say ‘We’ll kill Katherine,’ in order to get permission to use her." (Katherine dies in season five after Wesley's character Stefan Salvatore stabs her with a mystical blade.)

Due to the ongoing quarantine, the couple’s options to celebrate their first anniversary were limited, but White got creative. Professionally, she has expanded her repertoire, appearing in movies such as The Out-Laws, Let’s Be Cops, and Love Hard. The posts sparked dating rumors. A source told People, “It was a mutual decision, and wasn’t an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another.”
Just days after their breakup was confirmed, a source told Us Weekly on September 15, “Nina is devastated.” They said Dobrev and White “had finally started planning the wedding and things were in motion.”
The source added that the split is “still very fresh,” but Dobrev has support from “her closest girlfriends, who have been checking in on her.”

More than a decade after Elena Gilbert went into her magic sleep at the end of season six, the 36-year-old—who occasionally played Elena’s vampire doppelgänger Katherine Pierce—shared insight into how behind the scenes pay disparity with co-leads Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder led to her seeking a life outside Mystic Falls.
In fact, she recalled the pay differences she, Candice King and Kat Graham faced went all the way back to the pilot.
"Candice, Kat, and I were the three lowest-paid series regulars in the first two seasons," Dobrev explained in the book I Was Feeling Epic: An Oral History of The Vampire Diaries, out now.
