Now 45, she remains a household name, thanks to her 15-year tenure at SABC’s Lesedi FM, where she hosts the popular weekday show Imatlafatse.

Reflecting on her journey, Nestum shared her passion for growth both on and off the airwaves.

We play all different genres,” said Nestum. “I thought I wouldn’t have the interest to come back, but the truth is I still have so much to offer. “We’ve been there done that and got the T-shirt. Now I’m waiting for the trophy.”

With the cost of living at an all-time high, the 42-year-old says it’s imperative to be versatile.

“Old things come back and trend. I now see people rocking the same hairstyles we had as Abashante,” says Nestum.

She is currently employed as a station coordinator at a radio station in Johannesburg. “I perform, I MC, dance – It’s important not to be dependent on one thing,” stresses Nestum.

Nestum, real name Zakele Nyakale from the popular 90s Kwaito group Abashante joins The Hive with Bonolo BeeSting to share what she has been up to in recent years.

Speaking about how the industry has changed since she left the limelight in 2005 to focus on her career in broadcasting, Nestum notes that although the music has evolved, fashion keeps rotating.

She also founded an initiative to help female DJs called ‘Get It, Girl’.”

“In the gigs I host I only book female DJs because women are hardly given a platform. Beyond business, I dedicate myself to being the best mother to my two boys, aged 20 and 10,” she said.

Despite stepping back from the entertainment industry for a time, Nestum is thrilled to return.
