Sowcar Janaki, a celebrated Indian actress, is one of the most versatile and respected figures in South Indian cinema.

One of her notable Hindi films was Anokhi Raat (1968), where she played a pivotal role. She was initially considered for the role of Parvathi in ANR starrer Devadasu but as fate could have it, Savitri was finalized for the role. With over 400 films across multiple languages, she has left an indelible mark on South Indian cinema.

The biggest asset of Janaki is her brilliant nativity in any language she speaks. B.N.Reddy, an ace director who used to be a regular listener of these programmes realized the greatness of Janaki’s voice. They were making arrangements for their first ever film Shavukaru starring Sr.NTR and L.V.Prasad in direction department. Her parents were supportive of her passion for the arts, and with their encouragement, she pursued a career in films.

After the release of Shaavukaru on 27th April 1950, Janaki became Shavukaru Janaki though her surname is Shankaramanchi.
