    Mitchell “Divine” Diggs prefers to dwell in the shadows. After replacing Prudhomme in 1995, Platt made an instant splash by acquiring the publishing rights to TLC’s seismic, chart-topping 1994 single “Waterfalls,” and eventually signing Jay-Z to EMI later in the decade.

    Doing so is a decision that helped Jon Platt build a successful career in music, as the rap legend advised Platt to transition from being a local DJ and promoter to an industry power player upon meeting in Denver during the early ’90s. 

    Moving to Los Angeles, Platt’s first gig was in management, securing publishing deals for two of his clients with EMI, befriending Steve Prudhomme, the label’s creative manager, in the process.

    In 1996, Lighty and Scott-Young co-founded Violator, a management firm that amassed a client base comprised of stars like Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J, Nas, Mobb Deep, Ja Rule, Noreaga and Missy Elliott (the latter who Scott continues to manage to this day).

    He also helped expand the Def Jam ecosystem of imprints, establishing the Def Jam South, Def Soul, and Def Soul Classics divisions while inking lucrative joint ventures with Roc-A-Fella Records and Murder Inc.

    Records as President of the label. Helping build the foundation of the Canadian’s career, Roberson’s groundwork resulted in Drake’s deal with Lil Wayne and Young Money, which is regarded as one of the premier artists acquisitions in modern history. This is a habit that Jeff Sledge picked up early.

    That is when Liles joined Def Jam Records as an unpaid intern for the label’s Mid-Atlantic region.

    While she failed to land the crew’s services, as depicted on the Hulu series Wu-Tang: An American Saga, she was listed as an executive producer on the group’s debut album Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers and inked coveted free agent Method Man to a record deal.

    He also aligned the rapper with brands like Mark Ecko, Vivendi, and Reebok in further capitalization of his bankability as an endorser. 

    While those victories bolstered Lighty’s standing as a power broker of the highest order, his assistance in brokering the equitable Vitamin Water deal with Glaceau is by far his best executive decision of his career.

    Rihanna Leaves Def Jam, Signs with Roc Nation


    According to Complex, Rihanna has left Def Jam to sign with Roc Nation.

    Previously, Jay-Z signed the superstar to her original Def Jam deal while he served as president.

    She is also signed to the management arm of Roc Nation.

    Due to personnel changes at Island Def Jam Music Group, there was a restructuring under Universal Music Group, and the labels were split into three separate labels: Def Jam, Island, and Motown.

    Reid brought Pitts with him to Arista Records, where Pitts was named Senior Vice President of A&R. Housing multiple GRAMMY Award winning artists and nominees and producing over 200 RIAA-certified singles, 300 Entertainment has helped introduce acts like Megan Thee Stallion, Young Thug, Fetty Wap and YNW Melly.
