Karyn Kusama is an Emmy-nominated film and television director whose singular work uses genre to explore complex human relationships and emotions such as grief, identity, and anxiety. Although it faced mixed critical reception, the experience gave her insight into the challenges of working within the studio system.
In 2009, she directed Jennifer’s Body, a dark horror-comedy written by Diablo Cody.

Karyn Kiyoko Kusama (born March 21, 1968) is an American filmmaker. She went on to direct sci-fi love story Æon Flux (2005), cult horror comedy Jennifer’s Body (2009), indie thriller The Invitation (2015), and Golden Globe-nominated crime drama Destroyer (2018).
She made her feature directorial debut with the sports drama film Girlfight (2000), for which she won Best Director and the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature. The film, starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried, was initially divisive but later gained cult status for its feminist themes, subversive humor, and unique take on female friendship and desire.
Continued Success and Television
Kusama returned to independent filmmaking with The Invitation (2015), a psychological thriller that received widespread critical acclaim for its tension, atmosphere, and emotional depth.
