For nearly a decade, he has volunteered to train residents and see patients in Afghanistan. According to Cure’s website, 27 doctors and 64 nurses work there.
The attack came nearly three weeks after Associated Press photographer Anja Niedringhaus, 48, was killed and reporter Kathy Gannon, 60, wounded while they were sitting in the back of a car in the east of the country.
The assault on the journalists came shortly after an Afghan journalist with the Agence France-Presse news agency was killed alongside eight other people when Taliban gunmen opened fire inside a luxury hotel in the center of Kabul.
Also in March, a gunman shot dead Swedish journalist Nils Horner, 51, outside a restaurant in Kabul.
Eight Afghans and 13 foreigners were killed in January when a Taliban suicide bomber and gunmen attacked a restaurant in Kabul’s diplomatic district.
Wife of US Doctor Slain in Afghan Hospital Forgives Gunman
April 24, 2014— -- The wife of an American doctor who was one of three U.S.
doctors gunned down today in an Afghan hospital emerged today to say that she forgave the man who shot her husband.
The doctor was identified as Jerry Umanos, a pediatrician who had given up his Chicago practice to spend the last nine years caring for children in Afghanistan.
Umanos' wife, Jan Schuitema Umanos, read a statement today with their son Ben by her side.
Umanos worked at a community health center and at a children’s hospital in Kabul, helping train Afghan doctors.
“Jerry always wanted to serve under-served populations” his wife said. We hope that God will bless him.”
Umanos was one of the first doctors hired at the Lawndale clinic, and it took little convincing to recruit him despite the fact that his salary would be the same as when he was a medical resident, according to Jones, one of Lawndale Christian Health Center’s founders.
“He was just the fourth doctor we had, and he was with us ever since,” Jones said.
“We will miss him. "And we don’t hold any ill will towards the Afghan people in general or even the gunman who did this."
Mrs. A female nurse who was with the group was also injured.
Rowell said that Umanos was teaching medical residents and seeing patients at CURE, part of a network of charity-run hospitals based in Pennsylvania.
"Early this morning we learned the news of his death in Afghanistan.
He always had a desire to be the hands and feet of Christ," she said.
Umanos practiced medicine at Lawndale Christian Health Center in Chicago for 16 years, becoming a beloved staff member at the hospital. He was gunned down along with a father and son visiting the Cure Hospital, which specializes in children’s and maternal health, according to Afghan officials.
“As they were walking out of the hospital, the security guard opened fire on them, killing three and wounding another one,” an Interior Ministry official said.
A friend and colleague said Umanos had become more worried about his safety.
He always had a desire to be the hands and feet of Christ. Is everybody fine?’ He said in a sorrowful voice that ‘We are fine but Dr. Jerry is dead.’
“So I called two more doctor friends and they also confirmed, one was crying. “They were trying to get him to dance the Afghan way.”
Sharifi was not at the hospital at the time of the attack, but was working at an office about 5 or 10 kilometers away.
They could just leave the food out in the kitchen,” Jones said.
The Lawndale Christian Health Center provides affordable health services. He was a great supporter of our patients.”
Khan was not at the hospital at the time because he was on leave, but plans on returning soon.
“We’re not thinking it’s possible,” Khan said of the attack.
“How could this happen? This is a great loss for his family, for those of us he worked with, and for the people of Afghanistan," Rowell said.
Staff members at the hospital cried and hugged one another after the press conference.
Umanos completed medical school at Wayne State University and residency at the Children's Hospital of Michigan, according to ABC News station WLS in Chicago.
The shooting at Cure International Hospital in western Kabul was the third attack on foreign civilians in Afghanistan's capital this year.
The couple's two other children were not in Chicago, she said.
"I’d like to start by saying our family has suffered a great loss," Mrs. Umanos said, but added, "We are also aching for the loss of the other families… as well as the loss that the Afghan people have experienced. “Additionally, many LCHC providers and staff have traveled to countries such as Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Pakistan, Indonesia and Liberia.”
Attacks on security forces, Afghan civilians and Westerners have been on the rise since the beginning of the year, as Western forces prepare to leave the country and Afghans choose a new president.
The shooting occurred in the grounds of the Cure Hospital, considered one of the country’s leading hospitals, as well as being a training institution.
“They were not the people carrying guns, they did not have military uniforms, they came here under immense pressure and were here only to serve the people of Afghanistan,” Afghan Health Minister Suraya Dalil said.
“This was an inhumane and brutal action, and unfortunately will impact our health services.”
The Cure organization began operating the hospital in 2005 at the invitation of the Afghan government.
Afghanistan hospital shooting: John Gabel, Gary Gabel of Palatine killed with Chicago Dr. Jerry Umanos
KABUL (WLS) -- John Gabel and his father, Gary, were visiting Dr. Jerry Umanos at an Afghanistan hospital when a security guard opened fire killing the three of them.
The Gabels, both of Palatine, were identified on Friday night.
They were all Afghan doctors, colleagues working in Cure Hospital,” Sharifi said. “At the same time, you can’t count the number of children that Jerry’s impacted, the lives he’s saved on his own, and with the doctors he trained. “Dr. My heart aches for the Afghan people."
"I know Jerry would also like everybody to know about his love for the Afghan people," she said.
“I couldn’t believe Dr. Jerry was dead because I had seen him happy and well and alive in the wedding hours earlier.
“It’s very tragic,” Sharifi said.
