He contested the 2018 Assembly elections from Sagar but lost to BJP candidate H. Halappa by 8,039 votes, securing 70,436 votes (45.9%) against Halappa's 78,475 (51.2%).

Family Dynamics
Kagodu Thimmappa was married to Sunanda Kagodu, with whom he had three daughters; she died on July 30, 2014, at a private hospital in Bengaluru after a brief illness.[43] He subsequently married Deepa Kagodu, who has been associated with property matters linked to the family.[44][1]The couple's three daughters grew up in Sagar, Karnataka, where Thimmappa maintained strong ties to his rural roots amid his political career.His term lasted from May 14, 1980, when he was elected, until May 22, 1980, when he took the oath of office.
