    Joanna Moore, an American television and film actress, was born in 1934 as Dorothy Cook in Americus, Georgia, USA.

    She was the eldest of two daughters of scientist Henry Cook and his wife Dorothy English Cook.

      Following several roles in TV series episodes, Joanna made her film debut in the crime drama "Appointment with a Shadow" in 1957. On February 29, 1956, she married Don Oreck, "a California sportswear manufacturer", in Clark County, Nevada.[3][25][26] Having embarked on a new journey all the way across the country, Jo Ann would always carry fond memories of her life in Georgia, saying, "Not long ago...I saw the set of a white-columned plantation home used in a movie, and...it made my homesickness worse..."[12] She also said, "I wouldn't take anything for having grown up in Americus...We had such fun--no drinking or wild parties, but prom parties and peanut boilings and hay rides."[9]

      Discovered

      Some credit the discovery to producer Albert Zugsmith himself,[3][9][27] but there is no doubt that Jo Ann's life changed drastically after she was "...discovered by...the wife of a movie producer" who insisted on a screen test.[12] This resulted in a part in Slim Carter,[12][27] and "the first thing she knew, she had a seven-year contract at Universal Studios."[12] In her own words, there "was already a Cook girl under contract at Universal-International, and the studio just sort of dealt Moore out to me."[12]Joanna Moore, "as Southern as the Stars and Bars",[9] "appeared in five movies and several television shows" before August 1958,[27] quickly capitalizing on her authentic Southern accent and poise to secure roles in major studio productions.

      She lost three fingers on her left hand from an accident, and later wrote a short story about a woman whose grandchild was fascinated by "Nana's little hand."

      Admitting her problem with drugs and alcohol, she checked herself into Camarillo State Hospital in 1970, but a year later was out and drinking.
