He walked to the microphone and started telling stories, backlit from the light of the refrigerator.
It was the most theatrical, most visually beautiful concert I've ever seen. He fed us books – we had beautiful collections of hardback novels and series as kids – giving us a love for reading.
It's a Wonderful Life
It's a Wonderful Life is my favourite movie.
I love her interpretation of songs like The Very Thought of You. I've seen a lot of jazz singers who are technically great, but they don't give anything of themselves. It was about bleeding from the heart, but my mother thought it was something else. She's smoking fags, drinking black coffee, waiting for her baby to maybe come around. I often think that Martin McDonagh is like the Irish Sam Shepherd.
James Stewart’s character is living in Normalville, working in a bank. The band contributed the track 'A Sense Of Freedom' from their set to the 'Live For Ireland' compilation which released in 1987. His shop was musty – the real old book-shoppy thing with the ladder running along the shelves at the top. She took it literally.
I love Elbow’s album The Seldom Seen Kid. The big hit from that album was One Day Like This, but it's my least-favourite song on the album. As I got older, reading it again, it became something completely different – I saw it's about integrity, written at a time when there was a lot of civil unrest and racism in America’s Deep South.
Curse of the Starving Class
I remember seeing Sam Shepard’s play, Curse of the Starving Class, on Broadway.
It was beautiful and joyous to watch. She comes in for rehearsal and she's out of it; she badly sings a couple of songs with them. This opening follows preview performances at the Moat Theatre in Naas from Wednesday, January 27th, to Saturday, January 30th. Her voice was as pure and beautiful as it was in her twenties. She has a voice made of chocolate.
She’s on the phone to a guy whom she's not interested in, agreeing to go on a date. Sarah Vaughan left her heart on the stage’s floor.
To Kill a Mockingbird
When I was maybe 16 or 17, I read To Kill a Mockingbird.
