He also swore a treaty of friendship with Abimelech, the king of Gerar.
After this, Abraham faced his greatest trial of faith. Abraham trusted God that everything would work out since God had promised this son Isaac and through him would the blessings come. Recognizing this difficulty, the two men decided to part on friendly terms. His wife Sarai, nephew Lot and his wife, and the remaining family join him in the journey.
Abram armed his servants and pursued the attackers and recovered his nephew and his goods.
God reaffirmed the covenant originally made with Abram, when Abram started to get concerned about his lack of offspring. Isaac is spared when the Angel of the Lord stops his father from sacrificing him.
Abraham, the "father of the faithful," lives to see his son turn 75 and his grandson Jacob (later renamed Israel) to the age of 15.
Suddenly, Abraham was in a conversation with God himself, who admitted that he intended to destroy the wicked city of Sodom. A coalition of kings conquered Sodom and Gomorrha, seizing the cities and their inhabitants, including Lot. Abram responded by arming his servants (numbering 318) and pursuing the victorious kings. When a famine struck the land, Abram sought refuge in the wealthy country of Egypt.
Early the next morning he rose early and departed with Isaac.
As Abraham was about to slay his son as an offering, God provided a ram as a substitute.
Abraham passed this supreme test and God made the covenant with him unconditional. Sarai provided her Egyptian handmaid Hagar who bore a son Ishmael to Abram when he was 86 years old. Abram knew that the Egyptians were likely to seize his beautiful wife, and he feared that they would eliminate him in order to legally marry her.
He was joined by his wife and their household servants, along with his nephew Lot. After spending some time at Shechem, where he built an altar to God, he moved on to a place between the cities of Bethel and Ai. (It’s important to note that many of these places only received their names hundreds of years later, so Abraham didn’t know these places by those names at that time).
The Journey to Egypt
Abram continued to move around, heading farther south toward the desolate region of the Negev.
Abram, as the senior of the two, had the right to choose his territory first, but gave the choice to Lot who selfishly choose the most desirable land for himself. Terah, his father, was 130 years old at his birth.
At this very moment an angel appeared, calling him to put the knife down, because now “I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” Abraham did so, offering a nearby ram in place of his son and joyfully returning home with the boy. In our next lesson, we will learn about the life of the person God used to delivery his people out of slavery and give them his holy law.
He responded by rebuking Abraham for the deception, lavishing gifts on Abraham, and recognizing that Abraham has a special relationship with God.
Finally, when Abraham was a hundred years old, Sarah gave birth to a son. God also called on Abraham to confirm this covenant by submitting to the painful procedure of circumcision, along with all the male members of his household, which Abraham obeyed.
The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrha
At the age of 99, Abraham invited three mysterious strangers to enjoy a meal with him and receive hospitality.
It became even more of a test of faith when a famine hit the land forcing the pilgrims into Egypt.
After their return Abram and Lot parted company over sufficient grazing land for their herds and flocks. This choice was to backfire on him later.
