Friendship with Gopal Krishna Roy

Gopal Krishna Roy, a journalist with UNI, maintained contact with Suchitra Sen even after her retirement. Out of her approximately 60 films, nearly 30 featured her alongside Uttam Kumar.

She dedicated much of her post-retirement time to the Ramakrishna Mission, frequently visiting Bharat Maharaj of Belur Math and Kanai Maharaj at Golpark Ramkrishna Mission. Her pairing with Uttam Kumar in Sharrey Chuattor marked the beginning of Bengali cinema’s first iconic on-screen couple. Her reclusive nature earned her the moniker “Greta Garbo of India.”

Reasons for her retirement were multifaceted, including the perceived decline in the quality of Bengali cinema, the loss of familiar collaborators, and the lack of compelling scripts.

Their exceptional chemistry often led to speculation beyond a professional relationship. Following the 1947 partition of India, her family migrated to Bengal as refugees.
