Later her boyfriend received a call alerting him his neighbour’s mobile home was on fire – but at this stage, Emer was nowhere to be found.
HOW DID FAMILY KNOW SHE WAS MURDERED?
When the fire was discovered Emer’s car and keys were not gone and her two dogs were still at home.
Human remains were visible inside the burnt out caravan, prompting fears among family that it was Emer who was deceased.
Family members said it was very unlike Emer to disappear and described her as a loving girl who valued family and loved art and photography.
Reflecting on that day her father Johnny said: “When she wasn’t around, we presumed it was her.
“She wouldn’t just go missing.
And we have outlined some of the key questions that continue to surround the case, including how gardai believe the chief suspect in Emer’s death was likely assisted by someone else while fleeing the country. She is author of Girls Will Be Girls (Orion: 2015), a funny introduction to academic theories of gender, and Contemporary Irish Theatre and Social Change (Routledge: 2023), an exploration of the relationship between activism and aesthetics on the Irish stage.
In particular, the man has the Eye of Horus, an ancient Egyptian symbol, tattooed on his Adam’s apple.
The Interpol alert states Griffin travelled to Germany in 2005 but his current location is not known.
The alert reads: “Police believe that GRIFFIN may have attempted
to fake his own death and is now hiding from
authorities.”
A garda spokesperson added: “Investigating Gardai are hopeful that the public can assist with efforts to trace John Griffin, formerly of the Mervue area of Galway City.
“Gardai believe that John Griffin may have information that will assist them and are eager to interview him as part of the investigation.”
They are appealing to anyone who may know of John’s whereabouts or have seen or spoken to him in the year’s since April 2005.

A DISTINCTIVE tattoo could be the key in solving the murder of a 23-year-old art student whose body was discovered in a burnt out caravan in 2005.
On the morning of April 8, 2005 Emer needed to charge her mobile phone but, due to there being an electricity problem, she decided to go to her neighbour John Griffin’s mobile home to charge it.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardai are of the belief that John Griffin is still alive and at the time of his disappearance he was assisted by a person or persons unknown in leaving the island of Inis Mor.
“AGS have never received a Missing Person report in respect of John Griffin.
