The first course of action for Humanitas is to publish the "Open Letter to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam" in five major U.S. newspapers. Religion: Quaker. In October Joan begins touring with Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue.

Baptism, an album of poetry recited and sung, is released, Joan again appears at the Newport Folk Festival, and Any Day Now, a two-record collection of Bob Dylan songs, is released.

Simply labeled Joan Baez, it was an immediate success. In December she both performs at a benefit for striking farm workers in California, and participates in a Christmas vigil at San Quentin Penitentiary urging the commutation of death sentences for 64 prisoners.

1967

While performing in Japan, Joan's political comments are intentionally mistranslated.

Her political leanings were once again evident in her 1973 album "Where Are You Now, My Son," which included recordings made by Baez in North Vietnam. Her album "Play Me Backwards," released in late 1992, showcased a softer, rock-oriented sound reminiscent of Mary-Chapin Carpenter's country-rock works.

Born January 9, 1941, in Staten Island, N.Y.; daughter of Albert (a physicist) and Joan (Bridge) Baez; married David Harris (an anti-war activist), 1968 (divorced, 1971); children: Gabriel.

Joan appears at the Monterey Folk Festival with Bob Dylan (and invites him to be a surprise guest on her summer tour) and headlines at the Newport Folk Festival. The CIA denies any involvement in the matter.

In 2001 Farrar, Straus, and Giroux released Positively Fourth Street by David Hajdu. As she worked to develop her technique and range of songs, Baez began to perform professionally in Boston coffeehouses and quickly became a favorite of Harvard University students.

It featured duets with old friends Paul Simon and Jackson Browne, as well as a surprising collaboration with the Gypsy Kings on a flamenco version of Frank Sinatra's "My Way."

In recent decades, Baez has focused more on her social activism rather than concerts and album releases. Publication is followed by a nationwide book tour including San Francisco, Nashville, New York, Los Angeles, Menlo Park, Berkeley, Chicago, and Miami.
