Bradford-born actress Sophie McShera has appeared in a number of films and TV shows since the conclusion of Downton Abbey, where she portrayed Daisy Mason for six years
It's been nearly a decade since the final season of Downton Abbey graced our TV screens - so what is fan favorite star Sophie McShera up to now?
The historical drama, set between 1912 and 1926, chronicles the lives of the Crawley family and their staff on the fictitious Yorkshire country estate of Downton Abbey.
She doesn’t like to work out and doesn’t play any sports, as she prefers to spend her spare time reading books and watching movies. Even though it's been over ten years since new episodes were produced, fans can still catch reruns on ITV3 and stream the series on ITVX and Netflix.
The series boasted a star-studded cast, including Hugh Bonneville as Robert Crawley and Maggie Smith as Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham.
It was nominated for three awards.
Roles in movies
Sophie has been credited with appearing in six movies, making her debut appearance in the 2014 romantic drama “Highway to Dhampus”, written and directed by Rick McFarland, starred Rachel Hurd-Wood, Gunner Wright and Suesha Rana, and follows the life of Laxmi who is running a small orphanage in Nepal; it won seven awards.
The following year saw Sophie play Drisella in the critically acclaimed family fantasy drama “Cinderella”, which won eight awards and was nominated for 37 others including an Oscar, and she then portrayed Mandy in the 2017 crime drama “Murdered for Being Different”, about 20 years old girl Sophie Lancaster who was killed in a park because she was dressed in Goth style.
In 2019, Sophie played supporting characters in both the comedy drama “The Personal History of David Copperfield”, and the romantic drama “Downton Abbey”.
Her most recent movie role has been in the 2020 short drama “Ganef”, which is about a little girl who believes she just saw the family cleaning lady steal an expensive ornament.
Stage credits
In January 2010, Sophie portrayed Cinderella in the eponymous play performed at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, and was in 2011 cast to play Pea in the play “Jerusalem”, performed at the Apollo Theatre.
Awards and nominations
Sophie and her colleague actors and actresses have been nominated for five Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, for their performance in “Downton Abbey”, winning three in 2013, 2015 and 2016.
Love life and relationships
Sophie is very secretive when it comes to her love life and hasn’t talked about any men she might have dated since the launch of her acting career, however, there are rumors circulating the internet claiming that she might have dated (or slept with) some of her fellow actors.
Sophie was in an on-screen relationship with Matt Milne, and the two made it look so real that their fans believed that they were dating in real life as well, however, this hasn’t been confirmed and neither of the two has addressed the rumors.
Before her breakout role in Downton Abbey in 2010, McShera had parts in Waterloo Road as Ros McCain and Emmerdale as Danielle Hollywell. Little is known about McShera's personal life and relationships as she keeps a low profile with no public social media presence.

Her most recent role in a TV series has been in 2020, when she portrayed Miss Graham in the episodes “Exchanges” and “Openings” of the critically acclaimed sports drama “The Queen’s Gambit”, created by Scott Frank and Allan Scott, and which starred Anya Taylor-Joy, Chloe Pirrie and Bill Camp.A national tour of "Annie" preceded drama studies at Brunel University, where she also launched a boutique confectionary company, That Sweet Feeling. McShera played Drisella Tremaine in the 2015 film Cinderella, directed by Kenneth Branagh.
She took on the character of Bryony in the British sitcom The Job Lot from 2013 to 2015.
After graduation, McShera began her TV acting career with minor roles on the soap opera "Emmerdale" (ITV, 1972- ) and the apocalyptic drama "Survivors" (BBC One, 2008-2010).
In 2009, she gained her first notable role on "Waterloo Road," a drama about the lives of students and teachers at a comprehensive school in Manchester. She spent her childhood in Bradford's Eccleshill Ward, where she attended St.
Joseph's College before joining the Footsteps Theatre School, which launched her interest in acting.
McShera's big break came soon after, when at the age of 12, she landed a role in a production of "The Goodbye Girl" at the London Palladium. She became embroiled in a one-sided romance with footman Thomas before accepting the affections of William, another footman who believed her to be in love with him shortly before shipping off to fight in World War I.
After being gravely wounded in combat, William asked Daisy to marry him shortly before succumbing to his injuries.
She subsequently found comfort and support from William's kindly father, as well as an unlikely maternal figure in Mrs. Patmore, who helped her advance to kitchen cook. In the same year she was cast to play the supporting character Gwynne in the adventure fantasy comedy “Galavant” created by Dan Fogelman, and which starred Joshua Sasse, Timothy Omundson and Vinnie Jones.
It follows a knight who goes on a quest to show to the king that his ways are wrong; it was nominated for four awards including one Primetime Emmy.
The following years saw Sophie appear in single episodes of various series such as the historical comedy “Drunk History: UK”, the comedy “Timewasters”, and the mystery crime drama “Murdoch Mysteries”.
Her other appearances include Galavant, Inside No. 9 and The Queen's Gambit. The ITV series was a massive hit with viewers and ran for six seasons.
Its success led to two film adaptations, Downton Abbey in 2019 and Downton Abbey: A New Era in 2022. She has long brown hair and blue eyes, her height is 5ft 2ins (1.59m) and she weighs around 110lbs (50kgs).
As of January 2021, her net worth has been estimated at over $1 million.
