She completed her A-levels at Perse School, Cambridge, before earning a master’s degree in history from St Andrews University in Scotland. To promote women’s studies and research, she co-founded the Women’s Research and Documentation Centre (WORDOC).

In 1982, Professor Bolanle Awe was honored as an Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Her mother was from the town of Ilesa, and was a member of the Abede family, a branch of the Royal House of Bilayirere, one of the 4 royal houses of Ilesa. She also previously served as the then Oyo State Commissioner of Education with tremendous impact.

Since her formal retirement from full-time service in 1998, she has been engaged in research and on occasion been invited to serve in one capacity or the other.

She was also instrumental in highlighting the overlooked contributions of women in history. Indeed, she has been able to trace back histories before the arrival of Europeans; and has several incisive publications to her credit.

Professor Bolanle Awe is the Co-Founder of the famous Women’s Research and Documentation Centre (WORD DOC) at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan.

She holds Masters and Doctorate degrees in History.

She commenced her career in academia at the University of Ibadan and rose to become Nigeria’s first female Professor of History. She then pursued and completed her doctorate in history at Oxford University.

Upon her return to Nigeria, Awe became a lecturer at the University of Ibadan, where she later rose to the rank of professor.

The Centre is a resource centre for research in women’s and gender studies, and an advocacy platform for issues that affect women in the Nigerian society and polity.

She was the pioneer Chairperson of the National Commission for Women [1990-1992], and was instrumental in the formal creation of the Ministry of Women Affairs in Nigeria. She one of the pioneers of the comprehensive study of women’s history and feminist history.

Her mother, Mosebolatan, an Ijesa native, was a professional teacher and one of the first women trained at the United Missionary College, Ibadan.

Professor Awe received her early education at Holy Trinity School in Imofe-Ilesa, St James Primary School in Okebola, Ibadan, and St Anne’s School, Ibadan.

Upon her father's transfer to one of the branches of John Holt & Co. in Ilesa, Awe was born.

She was born in a community where practitioners of Islam, Christianity, and the Yoruba religion lived harmoniously.

She attended Holy Trinity School, Omofe-Ilesha, before moving with her family to Ibadan when she was 8 years old, she later continued her education at St James Primary School, Okebola, Ibadan and St Anne's School, Ibadan.

She took her A-levels at the Perse School in Cambridge.

Professor Bolanle Awe is considered a pioneering driving force in the comprehensive study of women’s history in Nigeria. She became the first female lecturer in the University of Ibadan’s History Department, where she integrated oral traditions into historical research, reshaping narratives on pre-colonial Nigeria.

In the 1980s, recognising the erasure of women in historical discourse, she co-founded the Women’s Research and Documentation Centre (WORDOC), an important resource hub for women’s studies.

A recipient of the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) national award, she later served as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Through decades of scholarship, advocacy, and policy influence, Professor Awe has profoundly shaped historical methodology, institutional reform, and gender discourse in Nigeria, ensuring that women’s contributions are recognised in national history.

Professor Bolanle Awe is a renowned scholar, feminist, and exceptional educationist.

A consummate Historian, Teacher, Author, Administrator, and Advocate for Women Empowerment, Professor Bolanle Awe was born on January 28, 1933.

As one of the historians who integrated oral traditions into academic research, she played a crucial role in reconstructing pre-colonial histories. Her mother was a teacher. She went to St Andrews University in Scotland where she obtained a master's degree in history, before taking a doctorate in history at Somerville College, Oxford.

Awe then returned to Nigeria, where she became the first female lecturer at the Department of History, at the University of Ibadan, this advancent made her the first female academic staff in a Nigerian university.

She is one of the few historians that incorporate oral traditions in evidence. She is also widely celebrated as ‘The Matriarch of Feminist History’ for her unwavering display of positive values, promotion of Yoruba culture, and advancement of scholarship.

She was happily married with children for some 55 years to Professor Olumuyiwa Awe of blessed memory.

Dr Bolanle Awe was born on 28 January 1933 in the town of Ilesa, Colonial Nigeria to Samuel Akindeji Fajembola and Mosebolatan Abede.

Her father was originally from the town of Ibadan, and also he was a cocoa trader a manager at the John Holt & Co, a shipping and general merchandise company.

Among others, she was Pro-Chancellor & Chairman of Council, University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

An Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic [OFR], Professor Bolanle Awe has received many other commendations, including an honorary doctorate degree at the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the University of Ibadan.
