The first hospital, St. Paul�s, also opened in 1938. In honor of Breaux Bridge’s renowned status as the “Crawfish Capitol of the World”, colorful crawfish were added to the overhead structures of the bridge.

Breaux Bridge
Breaux Bridge, now known as the “Crawfish Capital of the World,” was founded in the late 1700s when Acadian exile Firmin Breaux purchased land along Bayou Teche and built a footbridge to connect both sides of his property.

The larger tract was part of a 92-arpent tract which extended from Bayou Vermilion to the 40-arpent road east of the Teche, according to Seymour.It collapsed, fortunately with no casualties, 50 years after it was erected and was replaced by our current bridge.

The bridge of 1950 is a steel bridge with a vertical lift span and concrete approaches. According to Geneva Bailey Seymour�s genealogical study titled Breaux, Firmin lived at the West end of the bridge in Breaux Bridge by 1786.
