KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 17): Primeworks Studios' (PWS) former chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Ahmad Izham Omar has been appointed The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia's executive director of content and creative for its streaming service Disney+ with immediate effect.

PWS, owned by Media Prima Bhd, is Malaysia's largest content production company.

Last month, Media Prima announced that Izham would be leaving the group on Nov 13 to pursue new challenges.

According to a report by Variety released yesterday, Izham would be based in Singapore and report to Amit Malhotra, the regional lead in emerging markets at The Walt Disney Company Asia Pacific.

"Omar will be responsible for developing and producing original programming as well as acquiring content, ensuring end-to-end title launch readiness, the company said.

He was also the executive producer and co-screenwriter for Pulang, Malaysia's first-ever Netflix Original.

“I have decided to take on new challenges in the media and entertainment business. He will also oversee the production of surround content for major sports and general entertainment programs," the report wrote.

Within Southeast Asia, Disney+ has only launched in Indonesia to-date, where it entered into a partnership with leading local player Telkomsel and branded the service Disney+ Hotstar.

Izham has over 28 years of experience in the media and entertainment industries and previously served as CEO, Primeworks Studios, Malaysia’s largest production company and CEO of Media Prima TV Networks, which included Malaysia’s largest TV stations. He was first brought in to launch 8TV, launching numerous hit programmes including Malaysian Idol, Shout!

He has a monthly column in the New Straits Times called “For The Record” where he talks about all things music and creativity.

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 30): Media Prima Bhd said its chief executive officer (CEO) of Primeworks Studios (PWS), Datuk Ahmad Izham Omar, will be leaving the group on Nov 13 to pursue new challenges.

Datuk Khairul Anwar Salleh, who is currently CEO of Media Prima Television Networks, will also take charge of PWS effective Nov 14.

In a statement today, Media Prima said Izham had contributed immensely to the group.

Izham is also a multi-award-winning music producer, arranger, songwriter, and musician, with an MBA from Suffolk University, USA and a BA in Music Production and Engineering from Berklee College of Music, USA.  

No date has been given for further regional roll-out, said the report.

"[Izham] joins the team at an important juncture when Disney+ is expanding its footprint in Southeast Asia, and his strategic vision, breadth of experience and outstanding leadership will be key in steering Disney's creative engine and delighting subscribers with the magic of our storytelling," said Malhotra in a statement cited by the report.

Ahmad Izham Omar is the Chief Executive Officer of Primeworks Studio, the content creation subsidiary of Media Prima Berhad.

He was the former chief executive officer of Media Prima Television Network (MPTN), which included all four free-to-air television channels owned by the Malaysian media group including, TV3, ntv7, 8TV, and TV9.

After a sterling performance heading Media Prima Television Network, Izham now heads Primeworks Studios (PWS) as its Chief Executive Officer where his creative prowess and ingenuity are expected to spur Malaysia’s leading content company, specialising in movies, television programmes, animation and more.

Besides MPTN, Izham’s other notable stints have included heading the Media Prima Radio Networks (MPRN) with popular Malaysian radio stations including Hot FM, Kool FM, Fly FM and One FM in its stable.

A multi award-winning music producer, arranger, songwriter and musician, Izham’s musical career started with legendary Positive Tone record label in 1994, producing progressive music that captured the imagination of Malaysia.

His other feats also include launching a world-class video portal called Tonton, which was heralded as a breakthrough by the global industry, being awarded the Most Promising Entrepreneur Award by Enterprise Asia, being accepted as a delegate in the prestigious Asia Society 21 Young Leader’s Summit, and recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award by VIMA (Voice of Independent Music Awards) for his contribution to music.

Izham is also the Chairman of the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (CMCF) besides being a Trustee of Yayasan 1Malaysia.

He was also involved in the set-up and launching of Media Prima Radio Networks (now known as RIPPLE) and launched Media Prima’s over-the-top platform, tonton.

As CEO of PWS, he was the executive producer of Ejen Ali The Movie, Malaysia’s No. 1 animation movie of all time and the No. 3 box office Malaysian movie of all time. I thank all my bosses and colleagues for what I can only call an amazing ride,” said Ahmad Izham.

Media Prima group managing director Datuk Iskandar Mizal Mahmood added: “Datuk Izham has made tremendous contributions to Media Prima and the creative industry throughout his many years with the group.

He oversees original content production for Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar in Southeast Asia. Izham also oversaw Media Prima’s radio networks as well as launched tonton, the region’s first Over-The-Top (OTT) service.
