William Shakespeare’s Plays

It’s difficult to determine the exact chronology of Shakespeare’s plays, but over the course of two decades, from about 1590 to 1613, he wrote 37 plays revolving around three main themes: history, tragedy, and comedy. This theory could explain why he left his wife and children in Stratford and reappeared 90 miles away in London.

He also skillfully utilized metaphor and simile to create vivid imagery and deepen meaning. Shakespeare had been involved in the dowry negotiations and so was called to give evidence in the case.

Shakespeare enjoyed visits from his many friends in the world of theatre, arts, and letters to his home in Stratford-upon-Avon.

The exact cause of Shakespeare’s death is unknown, though many people believe he died following a brief illness. He likely attended the local grammar school, where he received a solid education in Latin and classical literature – foundational elements that heavily influenced his writing.

Around 1582, at the age of 18, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, and they eventually had three children.

William, according to the church register, was the third of eight children in the Shakespeare household—three of whom died in childhood.

Shakespeare was the third child of John Shakespeare, a glove-maker and leather merchant, and Mary Arden, a local heiress to land. The loss of his son Hamnet at the age of eleven is widely believed to have informed the profound grief and emotional depth of Hamlet.

Finally, he often employed puns and wordplay for comedic effect, as seen in the witty banter of characters like Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. He had plays published and sold in octavo editions, or "penny-copies" to the more literate of his audiences. This notably included Queen Elizabeth I, who was a fan of Lord Chamberlain’s Men by the late 1590s after first watching a performance in 1594, and her successor King James I.

Following his crowning in 1603, the company changed its name to the King’s Men.

Globe Theater

By 1599, Shakespeare and several fellow actors built their own theater on the south bank of the Thames River, which they called the Globe Theater. His exploration of complex characters and universal themes continues to resonate with audiences across cultures and generations.

His plays have been adapted into countless films, operas, ballets, and other artistic forms, demonstrating their enduring relevance.

William Shakespeare's legacy is a body of work that will never again be equaled in Western civilization. Some of Shakespeare’s contemporaries classified it as a history or a comedy, though the original name of the play was The Tragedie of Troylus and Cressida.

Shakespeare is known to have created plays with other writers, such as John Fletcher.

Details about his personal life are limited, though some believe he was born and died on the same day, April 23, 52 years apart.
