Wissam Boustany

Wissam Boustany is an internationally renowned flautist, conductor and teacher. In 2015, they toured in Australia, Canada, USA, Holland, and Norway, leaving audiences consistently overwhelmed by the way they both perform from memory, bringing a completely heightened experience and intensity into their adventurous music-making.

Audiences around the world have responded enthusiastically to the transparent textures he weaves into a profoundly instinctive Middle Eastern tonality. In 1997 he was awarded a knighthood in Lebanon in recognition of his music and humanitarian work.

Thanks to the wonderful Arashi, whom I just met on the internet, we have been able to track down my COMPLETE solo in the first performance of "Il Viaggio a Rheims", recorded with Samuel Ramey, under Claudio Abbado and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe in 1984.

Wissam Boustany performs Johann Sebastian Bach's Concerto in E minor BWV 1059/35, at Selecteum des Arts et des Sciences concert with Quatuor Musique del Tempo, Wednesday March 2, 2016, in Saint Louis Cathedral of the Capuchin Brothers, Beirut.

This was from one of my solo livestream concerts from home during lockdown.

Conductor Wissam Boustany talks about the tour’s achievements.

Wissam’s experiences of the war in Lebanon greatly influenced his outlook on both Life and Music, crystalizing into a burning intensity, commitment, deep sadness, and spirituality that find their wings in the sound of his flute. This week proved to be a profound experience for Wissam and the concert turned out to be his 'unofficial debut' as a conductor, after which he resolved to develop his conducting.

Prestigious orchestras Wissam has worked with include the BBC SSO, BBC Philharmonic, LSCO, State Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, Utrecht Chamber Orchestra, St Paul’s Sinfonia, Polish Chamber Orchestra, Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, Cairo Opera Orchestra, Orquesta 5 de mayo, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra and Palestine National Orchestra.

Wissam’s recent interest in conducting led to the launch the Pro Youth Philharmonia in 2018, a professional training orchestra for emerging musicians, which wound down during the pandemic. He moved to Britain in 1977, where he studied at Chetham's School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music. He has been a long-standing flute professor at Trinity Laban, London, and the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.

More recently, Wissam has ventured into composing.

A little video I made quite a few years back, talking about articuation.

I decided to share my views on the very personal subject of ‘warming up’ in an introduction and short improvisation, all filmed in one take and unscripted, detailing why I think that IMPROVISATION is the best way to warm-up and raising some of the fundamental principles involved.
