British Hairdresser of the Year Angelo Seminara asks Tim Hartley, one of his hair industry icons, about his career, his industry experiences and his aspirations for the future.
In this podcast today we will not only get to learn about Tim’s rich heritage in hairdressing that led him to this role at Vidal Sassoon, but how he sees the hair industry moving forward.
For over 30 years he’s been inspiring generations of young hairdressers with his passionate approach to hair, cutting edge aesthetic and technical expertise.
His rise to the stratosphere of international hair design has been a remarkable one starting in the city of Manchester in the late 1970s, one of the centres of avant-garde punk style and ending on a global stage. “Be open-minded, seek out diversity, find a great mentor, work hard and love what you do, love it every day.”
It was around this time that Tim began to develop his signature style – a series of pared down looks which reflected his love of twentieth century design from the Bauhaus, the cradle of modernism in the 1920s which spawned the chair designs of Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, through the genius of Italian designer Gio Ponti in the 1950s to the work of architect Rem Koolhuis today.
By developing your knowledge of the hairdressing history means developing your knowledge for a more fulfilling and successful career as we hurtle towards the new now in a post-covid world!

I don't see this look on any of the international catwalks so where does it come from?
What's the hardest part of your job?
Sitting on an aircraft for hours on end and the time it takes to get from A to B. Also, I hate having to turn down clients if I have other commitments.
What projects do you hold for the future?
I have lots of projects on the boil, and I'm going to expand Tim Hartley Education.
After a 30 year career at Vidal Sassoonculminating in his renowned role as International Creative DirectorTim left the corporate world to concentrate on his own stunning visions of hair design. I have also started driving lessons so do look both ways before crossing the road!
What do you think of hairdressing education?
I still see the UK as the leader in trends and quality, although there are some amazing individuals coming out of other countries as well.
And his advice to the next generation? Tim’s intuitive feel for fashion and his eye for trends keeps him ahead of the game, and his international acclaim and popularity at shows are unparalleled. I've always been obsessed by images of beauty and fashion.
What has changed in hairdressing since you started?
Back in those days fashion dictated far more and you had to wear the look of the season to be cool.

TH 5.5 sold out
Tim Hartley is , quite simply, one of the world’s greatest hairdressers.
I think I'm growing because I sell out when I'm on tour and always have a waiting list.
How did you start hairdressing?
I started out as an apprentice barber in the 70s, which was a great background. Education has to be in your heart.
What do you think of young hairdressers today?
Apart from being our future they are the ones with the most interesting ideas.
I had no fear of cutting hair, in fact the first technique I learned was scissor-over-comb.
If you weren't a hairdresser what would you be?
I would have loved to be a fashion designer as I have friends in the industry and we have a lot in common. The New Romantic scene was sweeping Europe and stars such as Boy George and Grace Jones introduced a gender experimentation into fashion that overturned the accepted rules of dressing up.
His reputation was such that by 1987 Tim was chosen to play a leading role in the re-styling of Hollywood legend Faye Dunaway for a key campaign for jewellers Butler and Wilson.
