Identifying as being a British Mauritian with both parents migrating from Mauritius to the UK in the 1970’s, Shelina Permalloo was the first woman of colour to win BBC’s MasterChef-UK in 2012.

Shelina Permalloo

After winning MasterChef, Shelina worked on various TV projects such as Lorraine, This Morning, Sunday Brunch, The Food Network and then worked in various London-based restaurants.

Her first book Sunshine on a Plate was published by Ebury Press in 2013 and contains recipes inspired by Mauritius.

The Telegraph reviewed the restaurant in 2020 and described it as ‘very heaven’. She is also a panellist on the esteemed Radio 4 The Kitchen Cabinet chaired by restaurant critic Jay Rayner.

Shelina is mother to a daughter born in 2017 and was previously a Project Manager in the field of EDI and is passionate about diversity and equality.

Her restaurant is held together by an all-female management team which is very rare in the field of hospitality which Shelina is very proud of. With over 6.5 million viewers watching, Shelina’s innovative approach to Mauritian cuisine—a unique fusion of French, Indian, Chinese, and African influences—won her the title and set her on a path to culinary success.

Following her MasterChef win, in 2016 Shelina opened her first restaurant Lakaz Maman Mauritian Street Kitchen, in Southampton, UK, specialising in modern Mauritian street food and bringing the vibrant flavors of the island to the UK - described by Telegraph food critic Keith Miller as 'very heaven.'

Since selling her restaurant in 2023, Shelina has built a significant following as a social media influencer and brand ambassador.

Shelina recently appeared on John and Lisa’s Weekend Kitchen as well as a regular judge back on MasterChef.
