As Deok states, his works reflect a sense of horror in contemporary life.“Among young men and women, it is obvious that men are especially enduring something scary and cruel, or are closing their eyes against the heartlessness and cruelty of the world.
He describes his practice below,
“The chains in my work are fetters. Unlike most conceptual art, the entire piece from beginning to end is made by his hand.
In 2010 he began his graduate studies in environmental sculpture in Seoul where he became interested in the formation of the human body. His works create a sense of longing.

Seo Young Deok
In his works, Seo Young Deok makes sculptures out of bicycle gears.
The sculptures, both faces and bodies, convey a feeling of seeking for something that is not there. Seo’s chain sculptures reflect his observations of the modern-day busy life and its characteristics. The head-sculpture of a young man, much bigger than life-size, being placed on the empty ground, suggesting something afraid or a sense of unknown horror.” Overall, Deok uses the medium of sculpture to demonstrate his anxiety with modern life.
The fetters are all about our contemporaries’ complicated, forced relationships and cravings for materials. Sometimes, they are cruel, horrifying, and dreadful themselves. As Deok describes his intention, the characters “look sunken as if they are addicted or infected by something unknown.” But the message doesn’t stop with the individual.
His work has been curated in all sorts of contexts, ranging from galleries to art fairs to sculpture gardens and more. The crouching figure buries its head in its arms, and despite being firmly fixed to the ground, it is imbued with a sense of dynamism and energy. His sculpture technique is unique. Humans’ relationship with industrialization, technological advancements, and loneliness are all themes that shine through in his work.
Rather than molding the sculpture into place, or carving it’s form, he melts and links each gear into place. I want to show, through my works, the portraits of our time where personal thoughts and lives are ignored.”
Deok’s depiction of raw universal human emotion invites us to look beyond the physicality of the chains that the sculpture is composed of and see an element of our own experience in the sculpture.
In this work, 303 have been used. Some are with their heads chopped off or partly smashed. It could be grief, heartbreak, sorrow, or any form of emotional pain that compels the body to cower in misery.
The entire body of Deok’s sculpture is composed of chains taken from old bicycles and industrial machinery. It is a testament to the universality of his work and speaks to the beauty and comfort viewers find in his sculptures.
His work impresses upon viewers that we are different but the same.

Active since 2009, Seo has exhibited worldwide with galleries and art spaces throughout Europe, North America, and Asia.
He welds the pieces together, mirroring the dynamic system of interconnectivity that is present in humans in our DNA. He chooses to use a strong material such as iron because it is reflective of the strength and resilience of the human spirit.
