What is one piece of software or a web service that helps you be productive?
I am obsessed with my task list on Outlook.
I mean, we've never been here before. Rouzbeh Pirouz is an Iranian investment fund manager who also helped found the Iranian Business School. And doing something physical is especially important in the COVID-age that we’re currently in.
The evening is always for family-time. He moved to the US to complete his undergraduate degree at Stanford, followed by a graduate degree from Harvard.
By the late 1990s, Rouzbeh was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University in the UK, studying to be a Doctor of Philosophy.
I have dinner with my family every night and make sure I spend time with my daughter. Then after her bedtime, I unwind, and my wife and I spend time together.
How do you bring ideas to life?
I am a big believer in the bulldozer approach. If the current proposal is agreed upon, Iran will cut its existing centrifuges by two thirds, reduce its current nuclear fuel stockpile and the country will promise not to build new enrichment facilities for 15 years.
It means you can be confident that everything will work out because the right people are in the right roles.
What’s one trend that excites you?
It might be a double-edged sword, by I’m interested in living through this digital age. A return of more than 10x the initial stake from original VC investor 3i was achieved.
Mondus was sold to Telecom Italia in 2002 and Rouzbeh went on to co-found Pelican Partners.
Over 20 years later, Rouzbeh still heads up Pelican as Chairman.
Rouzbeh also founded a successful frontier financial services group in 2006.
As he lives with a physical disability, Rouzbeh is committed to furthering the causes of disabled people, particularly those in developing countries.
His philanthropic ventures also include the arts in Europe and the Middle East.
While at Oxford, Rouzbeh was bitten by the tech bug, which led him to dive into the world of entrepreneurial tech.
In 1997 he co-founded London-based Mondus.com. In exchange, the U.S. and allies will list some of the sanctions that have constricted Iran's economy for decades. He watched the negotiations closely and had been anticipating a deal for months.
ROUZBEH PIROUZ: We've been waiting for the news for such a long time.
With a task list, I can be proactive instead of reactive to my day.
What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?
I would recommend Jordan Peterson’s The 12 Rules for Life. It’s good to have passion for a project, but that will only get you so far, so be sensible.
As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?
As an entrepreneur, I always tell people to build positive relationships and believe in people.
How will removing the sanctions affect your business?
PIROUZ: Well, we have had a huge amount of interest over the past year or so that these negotiations have been going on from investors all over the world who are interested in the potential of the Iranian market. We had presidential debates in Iran that were broadcast on national television.
In life, and business, if you get knocked down, you get back up again and keep going.
What is one business idea that you’re willing to give away to our readers?
My business idea that I am working on right now and is nearly ready for launch is Spectacle. Nearly 20 years later, Rouzbeh remains Senior Partner with Pelican Partners and has completed deals over $50 million.
Based in the UK for the last 20 years, Rouzbeh is an experienced entrepreneur with global experience.
So, you know, I suspect that a decision has already been taken to go along with this.
MARTIN: How much political pressure was the new president, Rouhani, under to get to a deal?
PIROUZ: Well, President Rouhani was clearly elected on a platform that was quite explicit about trying to get the sanctions on Iran removed.
I read it, and it was a game-changer for me and had a massive impact on my life.
I love the perspective on life – that it’s not about happiness or sadness, but about structure and disorder and being disciplined.
What is your favorite quote?
My favourite quote is from Theodore Roosevelt, and it says,
“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.
He said that in his opinion, this was just the first step and that it was important for Iran to try to mend relations with countries with which it has had a fractured relationship. A fast-growing tech start-up in the business supplies procurement sector, Mondus quickly became a leading European tech firm thanks to successful venture capital investment.
Rouzbeh took on the role of CEO and raised more than $150 million in strategic and venture capital funding.
