I play with form, meaning and function and new combinations arise. These drawings appear ridiculous as your logical mind steps in to remind you that this is not the way of things but the wonderfully technical drawing style that Hoekstra employs makes them seem so tactile that one could begin to imagine a world flipped on its head where everything we thought we knew was actually untrue.
Infinite creativity, which is reborn in each drawing in an overwhelming puzzle, joining together different pieces in a new equation, and is a caricature of the human condition, also animal, which is reflected in form as it is encapsulated by meaning.

I find my inspiration everywhere where my mind can float.
I find my inspiration riding the train or on the road, where my mind can float through the landscape and new connections between things appear. With knowledge and understanding in adulthood comes a loss of this childhood wonder. The forms contain occult and peculiar meanings, pursuing entity and personality, they conjugate naturally, without effort. Through imaginative mechanisms, he unlocks the entrails and their secrets, exposing biological engineering that changes logic and functionality, trapping aesthetics and function.
Thus the analysis goes beyond the surface. Daydreaming is a trait that many schools would probably like to see lessen in the classroom and in their students but if you’re creative it can sometimes be the very best tool for discovering your niche. Without proper explanation, theories run rampant and with a good enough imagination, all sorts of weird and wacky thoughts begin to spiral around in their minds.
Graduating from the Art Academy in Zwolle, Netherlands in 2009 as a visual artist and illustrator, Hoekstra has not stopped his mind from wondering. I open up appliances and objects and freely change what is inside. Who am I? What is my reality and how do I get to decide how it looks and works?
