The expedition
After the failure of the expedition of Diego de Almagro, Valdivia asked the governor of Peru permission to complete the conquest of the lands south of Peru (known as Nuevo Toledo). He left Francisco de Villagra as governor in his place.

This removed Chile from Peruvian control. He rejoined them to show Caupolicán how to defeat Valdivia. Valdivia was not in the village at the time, and the defense of the city was led by In�s Su�rez. Joining the Spanish army early, he fought in Flanders and then at the battle of Pavia in 1525. Valparaíso was used as a port from the start, but it did not have many people until much later.

In 1544, Valdivia sent a naval expedition.

All in all around 150 Spanish joined the expedition of Valdivia. On the journey, Sancho de Hoz tried to murder Valdivia to take control. Valdivia had married in Spain, but in Peru he became attached to the widow Inés de Suárez, who accompanied him to Chile as his mistress.

This is because none of his group survived the battle. He explored further south and helped the colony grow. This group founded La Serena, located between Santiago and the Atacama Desert. However, in early 1548, Valdivia joined the royal army of Viceroy Pedro de la Gasca. For his help, he received a silver mine and became wealthy.

He returned in September 1543 with only seventy horsemen. After facing severe storms further south, Pastene returned to Valparaíso.

In February 1546, Valdivia himself set out with sixty horsemen and native guides. However, Mapuche warriors defended their land at the Battle of Quilacura.
