Background
Motojima, Osamu was born on December 5, 1948 in Kyoto. Member of Institute Electrical Engineers Japan (Research Paper prize 1994), Japan Physical Society, Japan Plasma & Fusion Society (Technology Progress prize 1997). Since 2015, he has worked for Franco-Japanese cooperation in the field of nuclear fusion as Director-General Emeritus of the ITER Council.
About the Legion of Honour
This order of merit was established by Napoleon Bonaparte on May 19, 1802, to recognize “outstanding achievements” of military personnel and civilians in the fields of culture, science, industry, commerce, and creative activities during peacetime and war.
It is made up of 16 national institutes and organizations such as the National Institute for Fusion Science, the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, and the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization.

Before coming to ITER, Osamu Motojima held a full-time professorship at NIFS from 1989-2003 in the Department of Fusion Science.
In 1998, he took over responsibility for the LHD Program; during his time there the device achieved its first high-temperature plasma. Son of Kenji and Kumiko Motojima. Motojima was a member of the National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology (ITER) Council since 2008, and served as the 2nd Director-General of the ITER Organization from 2010 to 2015.
Together with the National Order of Merit, it is awarded by the French government upon the decision of the President of the Republic. Motojima continued to direct the LHD Program until April 2003, when he became Director-General of NIFS, crowning nearly twenty years spent within the Institute.

Sokendai awards Honoris Causa to Prof.
Prof. The red ribbon on this medal is a remnant of the “Order of St. Louis” established by Louis XIV in the 17th century.
Japanese recipients of the award include Taikan Yokoyama in the past, and more recently, Tadao Ando, Riyoko Ikeda, Seiji Ozawa, Kenzo Takada, Heisuke Hironaka, and Mamoru Mohri.

On 5 June 2013, ITER Director-General Osamu Motojima was honoured for his long-term achievements as Professor in Plasma Science and education by receiving a degree honoris causa from the Graduate University for Advanced Studies of Japan.
The Graduate University for Advanced Studies (Sokendai) was founded in 1988 as the only university in Japan and throughout the world to offer exclusively doctorate-level training.
