At La Scala she has performed in 15 new productions including Lucrezia in I due Foscari, Tosca, Fedora, Turandot, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Lisa in Pique Dame, Manon Lescaut, Abigaille in Nabucco, Leonora in La Forza del Destino conducted by Riccardo Muti in Tokyo. In 1991 she made her Wiener Staatsoper debut in Andrea Chénier and has returned to perform as Lisa in The Queen of Spades, Tosca, Aida, Elvira in Ernani, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Leonora in Il trovatore and Abigaille in Nabucco.

Before her 1995 stage debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where she performed the title role in Fedora opposite Plácido Domingo, she had already performed in a critically acclaimed concert performance of Ernani at the Barbican with the Royal Opera.

With her daughter Natalya Maria moved back to Odessa, where she graduated from the vocals department of the Odessa Conservatory.

The young and talented singer caught the attention of the best theaters in Europe and began having regular appearances in the West.

Maria owes all of her achievements to hard work, a love of life, a realistic assessment of her own merits and being thankful for all that God has given her.

That’s not my problems. Leading roles in I due Foscari, Manon Lescaut, and Tosca followed, and soon she was engaged to perform in Vienna, Munich, Hamburg, London, and other major European opera houses.

She made her debut at the Paris Opéra in 1995, in the killer-role of Abigaille in Nabucco.

Her American debut took place at The Metropolitan Opera in January 1991, where she sang Maddalena in Andrea Chénier.

In 1987 in she decided to leave Belarus due to very limited possibilities to travel. She moved to Spain, where she was offered a job at the Oviedo Theater. “He was convinced that it’s disgraceful for an Armenian girl to kick her legs in the presence of men.” But Aghas Meytarjian was not opposed to vocal lessons, for he himself was an excellent singer.

“I took some musical notes, a record of Rachmaninov performed by himself, the records of Talkov and Horovitz, learned “Aida” in Italian in five days and fled,” Maria recalls. Maria was born with a serious legs disorder and heart disease. She sang the opening aria (Aida) at the official opening of the new National Opera House in Oslo.

Throughout November 2009, she starred as Turandot in the opera Turandot at the Met in New New York

She represented Russia by singing during the closing ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver during the handover of the Olympic flag.

She has since performed there on numerous occasions. I found it hard to come to terms with that statement, and one day I just decided I simply had no right to bury my talent. In 1990 Maria Guleghina performed as Leonora in Il trovatore and recorded Otello there with Renato Bruson under the baton of Gustav Kuhn. Generally, I love all things Armenian.

Her repertoire also includes the title role in Aida, Manon Lescaut, Norma, Fedora, Turandot, Adriana Lecouvreur,  as well as Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Abigaille in Nabucco, Violetta in La Traviata, Leonora in Il Trovatore, Oberto and La Forza del Destino, Elvira in Ernani, Elisabetta in Don Carlo, Amelia in Simon Boccanegra, and Un Ballo in Maschera, Lucrezia in I due Foscari, Desdemona in Otello, Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana, Maddalena in Andrea Chenier, Lisa in Pique Dame, Odabella in Attila,Gulnara in Il Corsaro, etc.

Maria Guleghina began her professional career at the State Opera in Minsk, and a year later made her debut in La Scala as Amelia in Un Ballo in Maschera under Maestro Gavazzeni opposite Luciano Pavarotti.

They were forced to flee to Javakhq, then part of the Russian Empire.

The family then moved to Odessa, where Maria was born, but she considers her homeland to be Akhaltsikhe in Georgia, where she spent her vacations and holidays during her childhood and adolescent years.

Orthopedists prescribed a special type of massage with rough stretches – a very painful procedure that had little Maria’s screams resonating through the streets.

Biography

Maria Guleghina is one of the most celebrated and acclaimed sopranos of the world.

He steered young Maria toward the Opera and Ballet Theatre of Belarus, but the singer was given a cold shoulder because she insisted that operas be sung in their original languages – considered Western propaganda in the Soviet Union.
