Ever since Lee lost his son to prison as well as his wife to the circle of life, he has chosen to remain well away from the limelight so as to lead a private, quiet life without any prying eyes.

As a police reporter for the Vallejo Times-Herald in California when the Zodiac began to terrorize the Bay Area with his murders, letters and ciphers in the late 1960s, Peterson covered the case from the start, earning many cover stories and scoops.

He remained deeply intrigued by its mysteries for many decades after, continuing to research leads, analyze evidence and correspond with other experts and aficionados.
