Dr. Unfortunately, the degree of satisfaction a reader achieves by patiently navigating its ten chapters is inadequate compensation for the persistently tedious experience.

Garrow makes no discernible effort to separate mundane details from consequential facts and there are few, if any, overarching themes or theses.

But as a presidential biography it proves a mind-numbing exercise in patience and pointless perseverance – 2 stars (Full review here)

* “Barack Obama: The Story” (2012) by David Maraniss

I had a great experience with Maraniss’s biography of the young Bill Clinton and this book on Barack Obama’s early life did not disappoint.

It also ends somewhat abruptly – just as Obama is leaving Chicago to attend Harvard Law and well before the start of his political career.

But it is extremely well-researched, quite well written and, in the end, paints a compelling portrait of the 44th president (as he approaches the end of his third decade of life). Dr. Dickau has performed at four national ACDA conventions.

And in stark contrast to the first 1000+ pages of the book, Obama’s presidency is covered in less than thirty pages. He has led the MSU Concert Choir on several regional and international concert tours. But Remnick’s reporting eye and his tenacity in seeking out interviews of everyone who ever knew Obama are remarkable. He has filled commissions for choral festivals, colleges and universities, community choirs, churches, and schools.

David composes numerous commissioned pieces each year and his compositions are widely performed throughout the United States.

Individual moments of merit are numerous, but are overshadowed by long stretches which seem aimless or inconsequential.

Its focus, somewhat to my surprise, is as much on Obama’s forebears as Obama himself. Significant commissions have included “Dresden Canticles” composed in honor of the rebuilding of the Frauenkirche in Dresden, Germany and “View from the Air” commissioned by the Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation in honor of the seventieth anniversary of Charles Lindbergh’s historic trans-Atlantic flight.

Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama

As epic in vision and rigorous in detail as Robert Caro's The Years of Lyndon Johnson series, the definitive account of Barack Obama’s life before he became the 44th president of the United States—the formative years, confluence of forces, and influential figures who helped shaped an extraordinary leader and his rise—from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Bearing the Cross.

Barack Obama’s keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention instantly catapulted the little-known state senator from Illinois into the national spotlight.

Three months later, Obama would win election to the U.S. Senate; four years later he would make history as America’s first black president.

David C. Dickau

Dr. His choirs have performed at regional conventions in Omaha and Minneapolis and at a national convention at Orchestra Hall in Chicago.

Dr. Dr. Dickau recently received the Distinguished Faculty Scholar award from the university.

David has served as president of the ACDA of Minnesota.

And yet, in hindsight, his political ascent makes almost perfect sense.

Because his presidency ended so recently, and due to his young age, it could be three decades or more before the definitive biography of Obama is written.
