Cradle Will Rock, Tim Robbins’s drama about a young Orson Welles and his contemporaries in the New York of the Thirties, was vastly under-rated. He died on April 4, 2003, aged 52.

His final completed film was The Human Stain, an adaptation of a Philip Roth novel, with Anthony Hopkins as an academic with a terrible secret.

Born in Lyons, France. It was remade in Hollywood several years later as the hit comedy Three Men and a Baby, with Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg and Ted Danson.
The film’s success on the international art house circuit opened doors on the other side of the Atlantic and Escoffier made his American debut on Nicholas Kazan’s Dream Lover (1994), a noirish mystery starring James Spader and Mädchen Amick as ill-fated lovers. Career: Cinematographer, camera operator, and camera assistant.
Escoffier worked with Neil LaBute on the offbeat comedy-thriller Nurse Betty, starring Renée Zellweger and Morgan Freeman, and on Possession, a brave attempt to turn historical literary research into a detective story, with Gwyneth Paltrow miscast as a stuffy English academic. Born in Lyon, France, he died of heart failure on April 1, 2003 in his home in Los Angeles, California.

JEAN-YVES ESCOFFIER established himself as one of Europe’s leading cinematographers, collaborating with the French director Leos Carax on several films, including Les Amants du Pont-Neuf, before breaking into American cinema, where he worked with such celebrated directors as Martin Scorsese, Gus Van Sant and Harmony Korine.
It co-stars Nicole Kidman and Ed Harris and will be released later this year.
Escoffier, Carax, Lavant and Binoche got back together for Les Amants du Pont-Neuf. Escoffier captured nocturnal Paris in striking monochrome.
Escoffier worked with many leading figures on the American independent film scene, though several titles fell short of critical or commercial expections.

Escoffier’s standing in the film industry is reflected in his work with Scorsese on the director’s pet project, A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies.

Jean-Yves Escoffier (July 12, 1950 – April 1, 2003), was a French cinematographer who worked with Mehdi Norowzian, Jeanne Moreau for Air France, David Lynch for Nissan Motors, and on music videos, "Hurt" (2002) for Johnny Cash and Mark Romanek.
A film noir, heavily influenced by Godard, it was released in Britain as The Night is Young and starred Juliette Binoche and Denis Lavant, reprising his earlier character.
