Lawrence Lifschultz has alleged that the CIA was involved in the coup and assassination, basing his assumption on statements by the then US ambassador in Dhaka, Eugene Booster.[10]

Mujib's death plunged the nation into many years of political turmoil. The attackers, a group of army majors, shot her upstairs after entering the home in the early morning hours.[29] Standing nearby at the time were daughters-in-law Sultana Kamal (wife of son Sheikh Kamal) and Rosy Jamal (wife of son Sheikh Jamal, married just weeks earlier on July 17, 1975), who were also killed immediately after.[29][30]The victims from the household included the couple's three sons: Sheikh Kamal (eldest, aged 25), Sheikh Jamal (aged 23), and Sheikh Naser (youngest, aged 16); daughters-in-law Sultana (pregnant at the time) and Rosy; and grandson Sheikh Rasel (son of Kamal, aged 4).[31][32] In total, the coup claimed at least 13 lives from the extended family and staff, with the assailants targeting the residence to eliminate the leadership.[33]The sole survivors among Mujib's immediate children were daughters Sheikh Hasina (aged 28) and Sheikh Rehana (aged 19), who were visiting relatives in West Germany and thus absent from the residence.[32][34] Hasina learned of the massacre upon returning to Dhaka later, having initially heard fragmented reports of a coup while abroad.[35] No other family members at the site escaped the attack.
