His government was ”levying taxes even on skins, gums, trees and stones”. Dhana Nanda was described in the book Mahavamsa Tika as “addict to hold treasure”.
He was so greedy that he hid big gold blocks in the bed of river Ganga. Chanakya was concerned regarding the foreign attack on India.
The Nandas had a diverse military system with over 3,000 war elephants, 20,000 cavalry, 2000 war chariots, and 2 lakh infantry during their reign.
Dhana Nanda was the last emperor of the Nanda dynasty. According to Plutarch however, the size of the Nanda army was even larger, numbering 200,000 infantry, 80,000 cavalry, 8,000 war chariots, and 6,000 war elephants.
Defeat and death
According to Jain work Parishishtaparvan, he was allowed to leave Pataliputra along with his two wives after defeat from Chandragupta Maurya.
Post the training, Chandragupta Maurya and Chanakya captured his capital Patliaputra and killed him, thus laying the foundation of the Mauryan Empire.

Dhana Nand Was the Last King of the Nanda Empire
The Nanda Empire started with his father and ended under his reign.
This is the reason why he started training Chandragupta Maurya. Chandragupta Maurya, the pupil of Chanakya was put on the throne, thereby ending the Nanda Empire and leading to the establishment of the Mauryan Empire.
Note: The Buddhist book Mahavamsa mentions nine Nanda monarchs, all of whom were brothers of Dhana Nanda and they reigned over the Nanda dynasty for a total of 22 years.
It is also suggested that Dhana Nanda was killed on Chanakya's orders during exile, thus clearing the path for Chandragupta's kingship.
Some other accounts also suggest that as Dhana Nanda had taken to Buddhism before exile, he renounced life completely after his clan was wiped out in a coup; thus not being a threat to Chanakya's plans and therefore was allowed to live.

Dhana Nand of the Nanda dynasty that ruled the Magadh Empire has been a prominent name in the Indian history.
During his reign, when he was approached by Chanakya (a great Brahmin philosopher) regarding the invasion from foreign invaders, Dhana Nanda insulted him which ultimately led to his downfall as Chanakya swore to destroy him and gathered an army that finally conquered and defeated him in the Nanda capital of Pataliputra. His saga of prosperity, misery, and rivalry with Chanakya and Chandragupta Maurya makes him one of the most powerful monarchs of pre-classical times.
Dhana Nanda’s father or Mahapadma Nanda was one of the sons of a ruler from the Shishunaga dynasty.
According to this book, Ugrasena was the first of these rulers, while Dhana Nanda was the last emperor. Chanakya took a pledge to take revenge. He somehow got closed to the queen and with her help and influence killed the King. One of the powerful rulers of the pre-classical times, his story of wealth, torment and animosity with Chanakya and Chandragupta Maurya is what makes him known to the world.
It was he who began to build one of the biggest Empire of North India which his son Dhana Nanda expanded.

Dhana Nand Inherited Hatred for Kshatriyas
Back then only Kshatriyas became the king and Nandas weren’t kshatriyas.
He permitted his daughter Durdhara to marry Chandragupta.
The exact circumstances surrounding the death of Dhana Nanda are unclear. This is the reason why Acharya Chanakya came to seek his help in protecting the country from foreign invaders.

However, instead of listening to Chanakya, Dhana Nanda insulted him which became the very reason of his death.
The Death of Dhana Nand aka Napit Nand
Chanakya took a pledge to end not just Dhana Nanda but the entire Nanda dynasty.
Although it could be said that the Dhana Nanda dynasty was very unpopular among the people and the neighboring states, possible explanations of the unpopularity could be their financial extortion.
Dhana Nanda is described as a powerful king who ruled over the Parsii (Prachya, i.e. He was then punished by the King for the act by casting into a subterranean dungeon along with his family with handful of grains and little water.
