He is globally renowned for being the surgical pioneer of DCD (donation after circulatory death) Heart Transplantation, the first series of which he performed as the principal surgeon leading a dedicated team in 2014 at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, Australia.
At the Sparsh Multi-organ Transplant Centre, Dr Dhital will build a comprehensive thoracic transplant program and lead an expert team of specialists to establish Sparsh as a state-of-the-art centre for end-stage heart and lung failure, heart and lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.

In 2009 he moved to a similar position at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, Australia. In Sydney, he was an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of New Wales and on the Faculty at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute (VCCRI). Together with Prof Peter Macdonald, the Director of Heart Transplantation, they developed the donation after circulatory death (DCD) heart transplant program.

Professor Dhital has just relocated to India to take up the Directorship of Heart and Lung Transplantation and MCS Program at Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad. Known for his expertise in complex heart and lung surgeries, Dr Dhital specialises in the management of the end-stage heart and lung failure including heart and lung transplantation as well as in the implantation of mechanical circulatory support devices.
Whilst his depth and breadth of experience allows him to provide a comprehensive surgical service in both Cardiac and Thoracic surgery, Dr. Dhital will also be involved in complex heart and lung surgeries including repeat and corrective surgeries for heart and lung.

Cardiothoracic specialist and heart and lung transplant surgeon Dr Kumud Dhital have joined Sparsh Group of Hospitals to lead the Heart and Lung Transplant Unit at the soon-to-be-launched Sparsh Multi-organ Transplant Centre in RR Nagar, Bengaluru.
With over 24 years of experience as a cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr Kumud Dhital has been associated with top hospitals across the UK, Europe, and Australia before joining Sparsh.
In Australia, he has been performing standard brain-dead and DCD lung transplants with standard cold-static preservation.
When asked as to why he moved to India, Dr. Kumud Dhital cites the challenge and excitement of contributing to increasing the number of thoracic transplants in India where the current numbers total less than 5% of what is required.
This procedure has been described as the most significant advance in heart transplantation over the past 3 decades and was subsequently adopted by the UK and some European heart transplant centres, with several US centres commencing these surgical procedures only in the late 2019. Prof Dhital also has significant teaching responsibilities for medical students and junior surgeons.
He was the lead surgeon for the St Vincent's Hospital's DCD heart transplant program which to date has performed 37 successful transplants from this donation pathway. Beyond his interest in surgery for cardio-pulmonary failure, he provides a comprehensive cardiac and thoracic surgical practice including pulmonary endarterectomy for Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension.
They announced the joining of Dr. He has been involved in machine perfusion of thoracic donor organs since 2006. He adds, “I wanted to give back to the region where I hail from and feel enormously privileged to serve my patients through their darkest time.”

Kumud Kumar Dhital
- Dr. 18 years of experience in his career include Heart & Lung transplantation and MCS therapy in the UK, Italy and Australia. He feels the talent amongst his multi-disciplinary colleagues, the enormous technical advances in the country and the necessary corporate support are the right mix to foresee an exponential increase in heart and lung transplantation in India.
He was formerly the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery & Transplantation as well as the Program Director of Heart & Lung Services at the Alfred Hospital and Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.
Following a science degree in Physiology and Biochemistry followed by a PhD in Anatomy at the University of London, Kumud Dhital qualified in medicine at the University of Oxford with Cardiothoracic surgical training in the UK at various institutions including the Royal Brompton and Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals in London, John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford before a transplant fellowship at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge.
Between 2003-2005, he worked for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre (UPMC, USA) as Assistant Professor of Surgery and the Director of a new Heart & Lung Transplant program which he helped to establish in Palermo, Italy for the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Therapies (IsMeTT).
