I like to write about children, and sometimes animals, who encounter hardship but manage to find their path forward. Kadohata drew on her family's experience for Kira-Kira, her novel for young readers which received the 2004 Newbery Medal.
Kadohata was hailed as a new voice in American fiction in 1989, with the publication of her first book, The Floating World.
Even when he was in his uniform, if he was off base, he said that restaurants would refuse to serve him because he was of Japanese ancestry. I sometimes wonder where it is today!

Cynthia Kadohata Biography | Author of Kira-Kira
Cynthia Kadohata was born in 1956 in Evanston, Illinois, the daughter of Japanese American parents.
She was my support system.
I discovered contemporary fiction in Boston. I decided to write a story every month that I sent out to magazines…which rejected all my stories month after month. Sometimes the person is good, and sometimes not. She always needed a typist, so sometimes she gave me work.
