First-born Kristin was followed by Bradley and then Michael. The White family purchased a 4-acre parcel in Villa Park and in addition to building a new home, they have built a 5500sq ft. He narrowed his focus to restoring and collecting vintage motocross bikes, eventually establishing Tom White’s Early Years of Motocross Museum. He wanted to race his KTM 450SXF with his buddies at REM.
He wanted to see his new granddaughter born to son Mikey and wife Parisa. Finally, the doctor ordered a PETscan. But since the last time he’d been there, someone had stretched a length of chain across it. An amateur racer who started on a mini motocross bike as a child, the 18-year-old was preparing for an upcoming race one weekend morning.
He would tell me about the financial end of the motorcycle business, the horror of the accident that left Tom’s son Brad severely disabled. Since Tom, Dan and I knew each other from Saddleback, it was only natural that his business (motorcycle parts) and mine (motorcycle magazines) would bind us together. I Ioved the guy and will continue to until the day I die.
Plus, when Glen Helen and MX Sports had a falling out that led to Glen Helen pulling out of the AMA Nationals, Tom worked tirelessly behind the scenes to get both parties back together again. The museum has many posters from the earliest years of MX in America and many of Edison Dye’s (the man who brought MX to America) original photos and documents.
After Brad’s accident, the White family found out about a wonderful center for brain injured adults called the High Hopes Head Injury Program which Brad attends four days a week.
For most people, the will to continue living would be lost. He hopped on a motorcycle and headed down a dirt road behind his father’s warehouse. “I decided I’m not going to ride it until I’m healthy,” White said. Always a successful businessman, what Tom loved most was working side-by-side with his twin brother Dan.
Oh, they had their quarrels, as all brothers do, but one day it went off the chart and Dan refused to speak to Tom. From that day on there were no White Brothers at the White Brothers. When you called to see what he was doing, he’d reel off a list of board meetings he had to attend, flights to far off cities for business he was taking and races that he had volunteered to announce (almost always for free).
But Kristin and Michael, now 41 and 30, respectively, assured him the collection would remain intact, he said, and the fundraising would continue. He was 68.
All of us have friends and acquaintances, but motorcycle friendships are intense — bonds as intense as soldiers in a war zone and as close as a secret society. Three nurses were hired to administer care for Brad 16 hours a day and 7 days a week.
Specializing in building motorcycle wheel sets, Dubya also offers custom wheel building, individual wheel components, and even wheel restoration.
