On Van Gaal: “We get on very well, he was one of the reasons I came here. He is a very, very good coach and he'll be great for United.

I’m very grateful to him because he wanted to sign me. But Sir Alex Ferguson himself withstood widespread press criticism in his early years at United to emerge as Britain’s most successful manager. Van Gaal, he contends, got “streaky”.

Mourinho’s United adventure will be determined by results on the pitch and the entertainment his team provides.

But part of Van Gaal’s frustration was also a six-month tsunami of negative coverage, including premature – and at many times incorrect – predictions of his departure. He makes players better.”

On Mourinho: “I think very highly of Mourinho. In the end he was untouchable. It was he who gave me confidence, and I enjoyed playing football like never before.

Rather than keep his head down, the then 34-year-old took a proactive approach.

“He was so angry and shouted so much about not being consulted that I was impressed.

“On that day he was a 'Special One' and because of that I hired him. It should have been the Dutchman’s proudest day in the job, but instead his face was etched with anger as his contempt for the British sports media was laid bare.

Van Gaal’s battling United team had just won the FA Cup at Wembley, the club’s first major trophy since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Also, he’s a person who wants to win all the time, and to take the club back into the Champions League as quickly as possible, so the focus is very much on that.”

On Mourinho: “He taught me many things, he made me grow as a player. When the mathematics say it is done it is done but until that moment we don't celebrate."

Mourinho gave off an air of satisfaction, Van Gaal a sense of injustice.

As Jose Mourinho prepares for life as Manchester United’s latest manager, one enduring memory of his embattled predecessor, Louis van Gaal, must be his final press conference.

And I think our great advantage in this game was precisely the strategic side."

He added: "I think the game was won before it started. Historic."

Mourinho also revealed that he did not take part in the celebrations after the game as he was afraid that the emotion would be too much as he prepared to leave Inter and become Real Madrid head coach that summer.

Within minutes of the final whistle, the BBC’s Dan Roan and Simon Stone reported that Van Gaal was to be sacked and replaced by Mourinho. We are both great coaches; it's what we were born to do.”

Mourinho explains how he'd beaten Van Gaal in 2010 Champions League final 'before it started'

Jose Mourinho has insisted that Inter's 2010 Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich was won "before it started" as he discussed Louis van Gaal's ego and how he knew exactly how his opponents would approach the game.

The Serie A side completed a historic treble that campaign, winning the Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia under Mourinho's guidance.

Bayern went into the match with a treble on the line as well, having won their league and domestic cup.

But it was Mourinho's side that emerged victorious on the day after two goals from Diego Milito, with the Argentine scoring in each half to claim European glory for the Nerazzurri.

And the Portuguese says that triumph was always on the cards as Van Gaal's tactical rigidity and ego were seen as something that the then-Inter boss could take advantage of.

"We knew Bayern had a coach, whom I knew very well, and I knew that his own ego, his own self-esteem, would always lead him to play according to his ideas - and this, for me, was an advantage," Mourinho told DAZN .

"I knew perfectly well that when they lost possession of the ball, it was a team with some weaknesses.

He is one of the few coaches who can make teams play better. Despite an extraordinary live radio rant from former United player and pundit Paddy Crerand that the story (unusually for the BBC based on anonymous sources) was “crap”, it proved to be spot on.

The exclusive was an example of tremendous journalism but the timing could not have been more embarrassing for the club and an unaware Van Gaal, who was told about the report by his wife.

He helped me to move to a new position, to provide more sacrifice to the team in general.
