In 1935 the family had lived in Richmond, Virginia. The collection also contains a large amount of correspondence, both related to his books as well as personal and other professional correspondence, and material related to his travels, and notes related to presentation and lectures he delivered to schools and organizations.

Biographical / Historical

Lorenz B. Graham was born January 27, 1902, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

His wife Ruth was born in South Carolina, and had a 5-year college education. The elder Lorenz was born in Louisiana, had a 4-year college education, and worked as an educational advisor for a C.C.C.

He graduated from Virginia Union University in 1936 and later received an M.S.W. He left Washington for study at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), where he was enrolled in 1923-1924.

This book portrays the life of a poor, hard-working black family in the rural South who have experienced racism and violence, yet maintained that someday their struggle would be over. Lorenz Graham received an honorary Doctorate of Letters from his alma mater forty-seven years after receiving the B.A. degree. In the following interview Graham shares aspects of his life with those who share the dream of a better society.

Graham and Etta (Bell) Graham, born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on 27 January 1902.^[1] His father was a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church. In 1924 he interrupted his studies to go to Monrovia, Liberia, where he was a missionary-teacher at Monrovia College (also known as Liberia College) from 1924 to 1928.^[1] Monrovia College had been founded by A. M. E. Bishop Samson Brooks, an uncle to Lorenzo (his wife was a sister of Lorenzo's mother^[4]).
