In a letter Selma Lagerlöf  comments ”is it not strange that Strindberg pulls the people around him with him into death; first his wife and his daughter, and now the man who stood against him throughout his life. The German text was published 1893 and the Swedish in 1897. The city grew beyond its old boundaries to the current dimensions.
At the same time, this was when the labor movement and revolutionary groups were born, as a reaction to the bourgeoisie and the increasingly visible gaps between social classes.
