Her first such book was Women of the Afghan War (2000). Ellis completed the trilogy with Mud City (2003), presenting Shauzia, Parvana's best friend, who dreams of living in Paris while she endures life in a refugee camp as a storyteller. There is nothing so satisfying as completing another manuscript, knowing I’ve gotten through it one more time.
She is best known for The Breadwinner Trilogy, grounded in the interviews of refugees at an Afghan refugee camp, who she met during her travel to Pakistan in 1997. When she grew up, her work and writing was mainly done by traveling and talking to others that have problems and documenting down the main things. She has won the Governor General’s Literary Award, the Ruth Schwartz Award, the Middle East Book Award, Sweden’s Peter Pan Prize, the Jane Addams Children’s Book Award and the Vicky Metcalf Award for a Body of Work.

Career
Deborah Ellis has achieved international acclaim with her courageous and dramatic books that give Western readers a glimpse into the plight of children in developing countries.
Shortlisted for the Ruth Schwartz Award for 2003, Mud City was selected as a New York Public Library Teen Age Read for 2003.
In her Cocalero novels, Deborah Ellis' fiction moves to the coca fields of Bolivia. Parvana's Journey follows Parvana's search for her mother and siblings after her father's death.

In 2006 Deborah Ellis was named to the Order of Ontario. Ellis' endings are never simple, but her heroes survive and remain loyal to their families. Among her other works are Looking for X (1999), The Heaven Shop (2004), I Am a Taxi (2006), and most recent Moon at Nine (2014).
