Following the Congress, Vygotsky was offered the possibility to become a research fellow at the prestigious Psychological Institute in Moscow. He was convinced that learning occurred through interactions with others in our communities: peers, adults, teachers, and other mentors.Unfinished, Vygotsky aborted this in 1927. Who is correct? However, it was only in 1960 that his dissertation would be published, together with “Pedagogical Psychology”, a book that had at its core the lecture notes he used while working as a psychology instructor in Gomel.
The summer of 1925 would mark a turning point in Lev’s life and career.

These displays gradually fade out as a result of external stimuli: imitating, consequences, and conditioning by others. As children learn to think in words, they do so aloud, referred to as private speech, speech meant only for one’s self.

Vygotsky used the stages of childhood development to further explain the relationship between culture and learning.

Instead, Vygotsky proposed the idea of the zone of proximal development, which distinguishes between what a child is able to accomplish independently and what they achieve under close guidance from a teacher. Further, teachers may present abstract ideas without the child’s true understanding, and instead, they just repeat back what they heard.
The values and beliefs of a community, including models of acceptable behavior, create pressure for others to adopt the preferred attitudes and protocol of that society. Vygotsky differed with Piaget in that he believed that a person has not only a set of abilities but also a set of potential abilities that can be realized if given the proper guidance from others.
