During World War II, Adolf Hitler became Goldberg’s main point of ridicule. In fact, Rube Goldberg was quoted as having said, “The pungent aroma gave me a greater thrill than inhaling the fragrance of the most exquisite perfume." In general, Rube thought of his childhood memories to be happy and not as complicated as the machines he would draw later on.

He majored in engineering at the University of California at his father's insistence, and after graduating, he worked for the Water and Sewers Department of his home town.
But Goldberg did not enjoy his job; he loved to draw and wanted to be an artist. Both of his parents, Max and Hannah Goldberg, were German Jewish immigrants. He had an older brother named Garrett and two younger siblings Walter and Lillian.

The young Rube Goldberg had shown a strong affinity for the arts at a very early age.

Most importantly, there are hundreds of "Rube Goldberg Invention Contests" held in the U.S. every year, culminating in the National Championship at Purdue University. Following the war, Goldberg continued to comment on world politics and in 1948 he won a Pulitzer Prize for a political cartoon titled Peace Today in which a suburban family is relaxing on their patio which sits atop an atomic bomb as it balances on a cliff between peace and world destruction.
Following the end of World War II, Goldberg became a founding member and the first President of The Cartoonists Society.
As a writer, he was credited for having written essays, plays, and even poetry. Later members included legendary illustrators Paul Terry, Al Capp, Bob Kane, Chic Young, and Alex Raymond. As a young boy, he would lend a hand in working his friend’s magazine delivery route and take great pleasure in smelling the ink on the pages.
In 1907 he moved to New York where he began drawing cartoons for the New York Evening Mail. When he was already in his teens, Rube Goldberg’s mother died, and his father did not take on another wife. Within his comic strips Goldberg created extremely complex machines that were built to perform a simple task.
Rube was a middle child, having been the second of the four Goldberg children.

The Goldberg family was an upper-middle class family of Jewish heritage. The idea behind Goldberg’s devices was so innovative that it has since been adapted countless times in popular culture—in Tom and Jerry cartoons, the board game Mouse Trap, episodes of Sesame Street, and the films Back to the Future and The Goonies, to name just a few.
Born in San Francisco in 1883, Reuben Garret Lucius Goldberg studied Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley and soon found work mapping sewers and water lines for the city of San Francisco.
Other founding members included Ernie Bushmiller (creator of Nancy), Milt Caniff (creator of Terry and the Pirates), Ham Fisher (creator of Joe Palooka), Superman co-creator Joe Shuster, and Otto Soglow (creator of The Little King). The "works" of his inventions tend to be composed of sunlight, running water, plants, and pets more often than mechanical devices.
