The disasters include plagues, earthquakes, wars, floods, invasions, murders, droughts, battles and many other themes. The third edition, with three hundred new quatrains, was reportedly printed in 1558, but nowadays only survives as part of the omnibus edition that was published after his death in 1568. Some people thought Nostradamus was a servant of evil, a fake, or insane, while many of the elite thought his quatrains were spiritually inspired prophecies.
According to his own account, he traveled throughout the countryside during this time, researching herbal remedies and working as an apothecary.
In 1522 he entered the University of Montpellier to complete his doctorate in medicine. His prophecy of a "young lion" overcoming an older one is often cited as a prediction of the death of King Henri II, where a jousting match led to the monarch's fatal injury.
After a further visit to Italy, he began to move away from medicine and towards the occult.

During this period, it is believed he encountered ancient mystery schools, which contributed to a psychic awakening that drastically altered his life’s direction. As a physician, he took a progressive approach to medicine, rejecting the common practices of bloodletting and mercury potions. It is thanks to this that his work contains so many predictions involving ancient figures such as Sulla, Marius, Nero, Hannibal and so on, as well as descriptions of "battles in the clouds" and "frogs falling from the sky".
