From 1933 Einstein and his family lived in Princeton, USA. At the “Institute for Advanced Study” he found ideal working conditions. And even acts that appear to adhere to the status quo are deceptive and throw out a flirtatious but provocative challenge: “A river will flow around your feet/ When a blue sari is unfurled/ I will toss away in the breeze/ Each of my masculine habits…/ You know how to swim, don’t you?”

The images that remain with me in these poems are those of garments thrown, quite literally, to the winds.

In the same year World War I broke out.

After Einstein had separated from his wife Mileva he married his cousin Elsa Löwenthal in 1919. In 1919, two expeditions sent to perform experiments during a solar eclipse found that light rays from distant stars were deflected or bent by the gravity of the sun in just the way Einstein had predicted.

The general theory of relativity was the first major theory of gravity since Newton’s, more than 250 years before, and the results made a tremendous splash worldwide, with the London Times proclaiming a “Revolution in Science” and a “New Theory of the Universe.” Einstein began touring the world, speaking in front of crowds of thousands in the United States, Britain, France and Japan.

In 1915, Einstein published the general theory of relativity, which he considered his masterwork. The move coincided with the beginning of Einstein’s romantic relationship with a cousin of his, Elsa Lowenthal, whom he would eventually marry after divorcing Mileva. For the year 1921 he received the Nobel Prize for Physics.

When the 12-year-old Eduard asked his father why he was so famous he got the answer:

quoted in Max Flückiger, Albert Einstein in Bern, Bern 1974

Through the political situation in Nazi Germany Einstein left the country in December 1932 and never again entered German ground.

Virginal, sleeping nightdresses awaken as wild, winged textiles and fly away, “wildly astray”, even as the rest of the world slumbers on – unaware of the nocturnal mutiny enacted around them. Arunava Sinha, New Delhi: HarperCollins India, 2014

“Let me tell you what I look like: pale face, long hair, and a tiny beginning of a paunch.
In addition, an awkward gait, and a cigar in the mouth …”

Albert Einstein, 1920

BIOGRAPHY

Albert Einstein was born as the first child of the Jewish couple Hermann and Pauline Einstein, nee Koch, in Ulm on March 14, 1879.

Einstein soon began building on his theories to form a new science of cosmology, which held that the universe was dynamic instead of static, and was capable of expanding and contracting.

Einstein Moves to the United States (1933-39)

A longtime pacifist and a Jew, Einstein became the target of hostility in Weimar Germany, where many citizens were suffering plummeting economic fortunes in the aftermath of defeat in the Great War.

In December 1932, a month before Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany, Einstein made the decision to emigrate to the United States, where he took a position at the newly founded Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1913, he arrived at the University of Berlin, where he was made director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics.

He successfully finished his studies in July 1900.

He moved to Bern and was given work at the Patent Office. Einstein also had ‘exceptional creativity,’ which led to his Theory of General Relativity, another trait of ADHD.

According to Einstein’s equivalence principle–which held that gravity’s pull in one direction is equivalent to an acceleration of speed in the opposite direction–if light is bent by acceleration, it must also be bent by gravity.

Einstein’s famous equation E = mc2 (where “c” was the constant speed of light) expressed this relationship.

From Zurich to Berlin (1906-1932)

Einstein continued working at the patent office until 1909, when he finally found a full-time academic post at the University of Zurich. In 1905 he published several of his important scientific works.

The “indelible script of fate” is erased without apology, and destiny rewritten “in the blue grammar book” with impunity and irrepressible schoolgirlish glee. In 1946 he proposed a world government in which he saw the only way to achieve continuous peace.

Einstein spent the last years of his life reclusively in Princeton.

He would never again enter the country of his birth.

Demure blue saris uncoil, morphing into tempestuous rivers in which hapless lovers with their outmoded worldviews might drown. Because of his fear that Germany was working on atomic bombs he wrote a letter to Franklin D. Roosevelt, the president of the United States of America, to tell him about the possibility of atomic weapons.
