The course was first taught by Alfred Espinas, whose Les Sociétés animales(1877) Durkheim greatly admired, but who was soon elevated to Dean of the Faculty. This was entirely consistent with his stance that concrete observations in and of themselves are not necessarily illuminating. But for the most part, Durkheim was unaffected by the war hysteria, and, though always a patriot, was never a nationalist.

Durkheim's interest in social phenomena was also spurred on by politics. He founded the first European university department of sociology in 1895, and one of the first journals devoted to social science, L'Année Sociologique, in 1896.

In "mechanical" societies, for example, subsistence farmers live in communities which are self-sufficient and knit together by a common heritage and common job. Different specializations in employment and social roles created dependencies that tied people to one another, since people no longer could count on filling all of their needs by themselves. In order to study social life in modern societies, Durkheim sought to create one of the first scientific approaches to social phenomena. Students studying philosophy, languages, history, and literature were required to take his sociology course, and it was said that he was such a masterful teacher that one had to avoid his class to escape his influence.
Durkheim's articles on Germany philosophy and social science had by now caught the attention of Louis Liard, then Director of Higher Education in France.
