BIOGRAPHY

Willis Carrier would grow up to solve one of mankind’s most elusive challenges – controlling the indoor environment.

After graduating from Cornell with a master's degree in electrical engineering in 1901, Carrier took a job at the Buffalo Forge Company, where he set up a research laboratory and experimented with the industrial applications of electricity. Many companies that dealt with paper and textiles were very interested in the idea of improving their production processes by controlling the levels of moisture and temperature.

Manufacturing of everything from baked goods to wartime supplies was made possible by air conditioning. Carrier was particularly proud that his company provided air conditioning to the Senate and the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. Although air conditioning did not become common in private homes until the 1950s, the Carrier Corporation became the company most associated with refrigeration and air conditioning in the United States.

His air-treatment device was driven by a low-pressure centrifugal system that drew air through a filter and passed it over coils filled with coolant; the cooled and dehumidified air was then vented into the living or work space. The Carrier Engineering Corporation was a center of both research and manufacturing.

Willis Haviland Carrier

Born in 1876 and raised as an only child on his parent's farm in Angola, NY, Willis Haviland Carrier was known as a quiet, gifted child who solved problems easily.

"My mother told me to bring up a pan of apples from the cellar," he stated in a memoir.

It was soon successful in producing not only air conditioning systems but also refrigeration machines. From the beginning, he began to develop a network of international dealers, distributors and customers. Carrier solved the problem by building the first air-conditioning system. The new system created a stable atmospheric environment within the shop that resulted in the accurate ink alignment necessary for four-color printing.

After advanced research and field testing, Carrier patented his Apparatus for Treating Air in 1906.

His interest in engineering led him to a state scholarship at Cornell University, where he met his first wife, Claire Seymour. The hot air generated by the motor was directed outside. Carrier leads the industry with energy-efficient products and manufacturing practices. Carrier Corporation continues to be the world's largest manufacturer of climate control equipment today.

Alfred University awarded Carrier an honorary doctorate of letters in 1942 in recognition of his contributions to science and industry.

Carrier and several other engineers formed the Carrier Engineering Corporation in 1915 with capital of $35,000.
