He quickly distinguished himself as an outstanding mathematician and became a fellow of Trinity College after graduating. In 1917, he helped Siegfried Sassoon, the celebrated war poet, draft a statement against the war. During his early years, Russell was also influenced by the works of Percy Bysshe Shelley. He graduated as high Wrangler in 1893 and became a fellow in 1895.

He remained a prominent figure right up to his death at the age of 97. He also gained a lifelong interest in politics, primarily from a liberal, socialist perspective.

In 1894, he married a Quaker Alys Smith. One of his final statement’s was criticising Israel’s aggression in the Middle East, calling for Isreali withdrawal from the occupied territories of Palestine.

Death and Legacy

Russell’s philosophy believed in the idea of critical thinking. She was a strict Presbyterian Christian, but also influenced Russell, with her belief in social justice.

Bertrand was born in a famous British family and his parents, Viscount and Viscountess Amberley, were known for being radicals of their times.

He particular, the Countess Russell was a dominant figure in Russell’s early life. He said he felt suicidal during this time, but his fascination with mathematics encouraged him to persevere. Russell spent much time dealing with the questions and emotional instability of Wittgenstein.
