Aside from the sweet tone of his voice, he was also well-regarded for his command of the Hindi language and being a talented guitar player. It is quite tragic to hear of his passing and to think that there is a younger generation of Indo-Caribbean people who might not be aware of the obstacles he overcame to achieve what he did.
Maharaj formally studied music in India, having received a scholarship to do so, and was invited to sing for and alongside icons such as Kumar Sanu, Dev Anand, and Anup Jalota. These local Trinidadian groups included Naya Hindustani, Naya Zamana, Suhana Safar, and Anand Sangeet. Rest in peace Mr. Satrohan Maharaj-ji, thank you for the music.
He would not make his debut as a singer for another decade when he first started touring with the BWIA National Indian Orchestra led by another Trinidadian legend, maestro Harry Mahabir (BWIA stands for British West Indies Association). Sending condolences to his loved ones. From then on Satrohan became a fixture of the Indo-Caribbean music scene for decades, part of the wave of local singers who were well-known for their Hindi film song covers and Bollywood-style chutney.
He sang all over the Caribbean, United States, Canada, and frequently in South Asia as well; competing regularly in West Indian musical competitions like Mastana Bahar. From Arouca in northern Trinidad, he began his career as a guitar player in bands from the age of twelve. Om Sadgati.
