He faced hard choices. His laws promoted Christianity, justice, and the welfare of the poor. Stephen’s son, Emeric, was raised as a strong Catholic and was well known for his purity and piety. It begins with the arrival of the Magyar tribes in 895 and ends with their defeat by the Ottomans in 1526. But Emeric died young in an accident.

Upon the death of his father, Stephen ascended to the throne around the year 1000. He and his wife had at least one son, named Emeric, who survived into adulthood. His life still speaks to those who want to lead with faith and care for others.

Stephen set up dioceses in his kingdom. His father, Duke Géza of Hungary, began the process of Christianizing the Hungarian people, and Stephen carried forward this mission with profound zeal and dedication.

Stephen was married to Gisela of Bavaria, sister of the Holy Roman Emperor Henry II, which strengthened Hungary's ties to Western Christendom.
